Mahmoud Qomatin, a senior Hezbollah official, emphasized that the group rejects any proposal to limit the conflict to only certain areas. He warned that if Israel attacks the southern suburbs of Beirut, Hezbollah will retaliate even more forcefully.
The above statement was issued a day after US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, including Israel refraining from airstrikes on the Dahiyeh area south of Beirut – a Hezbollah stronghold – in exchange for Hezbollah not attacking Israeli territory.
Not only is the US facing obstacles from Hezbollah, but its de-escalation efforts are also increasing friction with its ally Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently had a tense phone call with US President Donald Trump regarding the planned airstrike on Beirut.
Trump expressed anger at the joint statement by Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, as well as the video in which Netanyahu warned of the possibility of Israel attacking Beirut. Israel wants to maintain its current policy of preemptive strikes, but Washington demands that the Israeli military only conduct military operations in the event of a direct and immediate threat to Israeli soldiers.
On the ground, fighting continues to escalate fiercely. On June 2nd, Israel announced it would continue airstrikes against Hezbollah bases on the outskirts of Beirut if the group did not cease shelling towns in northern Israel.
Lebanese media reported that Israeli attacks on around 30 locations across the south of the country caused numerous casualties, including airstrikes near a hospital in the city of Tyre that killed four people and injured 127.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli troops in southern Lebanon, but denied responsibility for attacks in Israel. For its part, the Israeli military said it successfully intercepted two projectiles launched from Lebanon.
