Ms. Le Thi Thuy (second from the right) with association officials on the road expansion project following land donations from households.
Pointing to the land her family had donated, Ms. Thuy said: "This is one of the most beautiful roads in the village, because it was built with the consensus of the villagers, including my family, who all donated land and contributed labor to widen it, rebuild the fence, and plant flowers and trees."
According to Ms. Thuy, the village road used to be narrow and difficult to travel on. During last year's Women's Day meeting on March 8th, the association announced the plan to donate land for road widening. Many members were enthusiastic, believing that the widened road would create opportunities for people to escape poverty. However, some households were initially hesitant, and Ms. Thuy herself had some concerns because it was land she had been attached to for many years, used for farming and family production, and also contained newly built structures. Donating the land would require significant investment in rebuilding, which would be quite costly.
Ms. Thuy shared: "Everyone needs benefits, but building roads to serve the community, to serve my own family, and to contribute to the overall economic development of the locality is even more necessary." With that simple thought in mind, Ms. Thuy discussed it with her family and decided to inform the local branch and Party committee to donate land on the afternoon of March 8th. Her family dismantled over 100 meters of newly built fence, worth 50 million VND, to donate the land for rural road construction.
After her family donated land, many neighboring families also agreed to demolish their fences and donate land to widen the road. In addition, Ms. Thuy participated with the village's branch association and the village's Fatherland Front committee, going door-to-door to spread awareness and persuade the people and association members to understand the purpose, meaning, and importance of donating land to widen the road, which aims to promote socio-economic development and improve people's lives. Initially, many families were still hesitant; some feared it would affect their rights and livelihoods; some disagreed among family members; and some waited for government compensation... but with persistent effort, seeing the surrounding households donating land and the road to the village gradually widening, the residents changed their minds and supported the movement.
After two years of launching the land donation campaign to expand roads, Ms. Thuy and her association successfully mobilized over 100 members to donate more than 1,000 square meters of land and 600 meters of fence, worth hundreds of millions of dong. Five roads, totaling 8,450 meters in length, were widened to 6.5 meters and put into use, bringing joy and excitement to the people. Now, the village roads are wide, cars can reach right to the doorsteps, and the face of the rural area has clearly improved.
The movement to donate land for rural road construction is not simply about expanding roads, but also an opportunity for each citizen to demonstrate responsibility, love for their homeland, and community solidarity. The donated land is proof of faith in positive change on the journey towards building a civilized, modern, prosperous, and compassionate new rural area.
