Ready to donate blood to save lives.

On the morning of December 18, 2025, while on duty at the office, Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet received an urgent call from the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Department of Da Nang Hospital. A 40-year-old male patient with myocarditis, being treated in the intensive care unit, urgently needed AB+ blood platelets. The patient's condition was critical and life-threatening.

Upon receiving the information, Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet reported to his unit and quickly traveled to the hospital. After more than two hours of completing the necessary procedures, he donated 250ml of platelets, which were promptly transferred to the patient. After a short rest, he returned to his unit to continue his shift.

More than a month earlier, during the weekly briefing at the office, Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet received an urgent call from Da Nang Hospital. A cardiovascular patient was in critical condition and needed AB+ blood platelets. Without hesitation, he asked permission from his superiors and immediately went to the hospital to donate blood to save the patient's life.

According to Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet, platelet donation is completely different from whole blood donation. Whole blood donation involves directly taking blood from the donor, takes a short time, and can be done periodically every few months.

Meanwhile, platelet donation involves separating platelets from the blood, with the remaining components being transfused back to the donor. The donation process is lengthy, requiring good health, a stable mental state, and a compatible blood type. This form of donation is essential for severe and critical illnesses, but the number of eligible donors is limited.

Each time he donates platelets, he has to lie still for about 1.5 hours, with his arm extended for an extended period, which can easily cause pain and fatigue.

A memorable moment for him was one day in late May 2024, while out with his wife and children, when he received a call from the Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. A postpartum woman was experiencing severe blood loss, posing a risk to both mother and child, and urgently needed AB+ platelets.

Encouraged by his wife, he immediately rode his motorbike from Hoa Khanh ward to the former Ngu Hanh Son district to donate 250ml of platelets. Thanks to the timely platelet donation, the pregnant woman overcame danger, and both mother and child were saved.

For his persistent contributions, Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet was commended by the Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee for his voluntary blood donation work in 2019 and 2021; received a certificate of merit from the Central Youth Union for his blood donation work in 2023 and 2025; and was awarded the "Youth Living Beautifully" award by the City Youth Union in 2024. But for Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet, the greatest reward remains the joy of knowing that his blood has helped save the lives of many people in times of danger.

A noble deed

Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet said he started donating blood in 2011 while serving in the People's Public Security Force. From his initial whole blood donations, he gradually switched to donating platelets when he learned that his AB+ blood type was in high demand for emergency cases.

To date, he has donated blood a total of 51 times, including 7 whole blood donations and 44 platelet donations. Since 2023 alone, he has donated approximately 10 times a year at various medical facilities such as Da Nang Hospital, Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Da Nang Oncology Hospital, and other hospitals when requested.

Despite understanding that long-term platelet donation could affect his health in old age, Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet remains steadfast in his choice. He says that what gives him the most peace of mind is the unwavering support and companionship from his family.

According to MSc. Dr. Doan Thi Cam Nhung, Deputy Head of the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Department at Da Nang Hospital, over the years, Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet has donated platelets 22 times at the hospital, saving the lives of many critically ill patients. He is always ready to be there whenever the hospital needs him. This is a truly commendable act.

Lieutenant Colonel Ho Dinh Tri, Deputy Head of the Youth Department of the City Police, said that in his professional work as well as in the voluntary blood donation movement, Lieutenant Truong Dinh Viet always participates with a high sense of responsibility. His enthusiasm and perseverance have contributed to spreading the beautiful image of a People's Police officer serving the people.
