Nguyen Thi Huong is a golden girl of Vietnamese sports and has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. She is also the first Vietnamese athlete to officially qualify to compete in an Olympic Games for canoeing. She is also one of the two athletes who have won the most gold medals at the 31st SEA Games.

2024 was a historic year when Nguyen Thi Huong won a silver medal at the Asian Championships. At the Asian Junior Rowing Championships, the girl born in 2001 had previously excelled, winning both a gold and a silver medal. At the VTV Awards - Impressive VTV 2024 ceremony held in Hanoi on January 1, 2025, Nguyen Thi Huong was honored in the category of Most Impressive Young Face in the field of Sports. She also won the Young Athlete of the Year award at the 2024 Victory Cup.

On January 1, 2025, Nguyen Thi Huong wrote a letter requesting to stop training in Vinh Phuc . The content of the letter, as Thanh said... The post reads as follows: “I started training and became a rowing athlete in Vinh Phuc province in August 2016. Over the past nine years, I have continuously strived, overcome all difficulties and hardships, and dedicated myself to Vinh Phuc province's sports, winning many prestigious medals at international and domestic competitions, bringing glory to Vietnam and Vinh Phuc province. In particular, I was honored to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. However, for three years (from 2022 to 2024), I have not received the prize money for domestic medals and the nutritional support allowance for 2024. Now that I am older and due to family circumstances, I am writing this letter to request to retire from rowing in Vinh Phuc province. I respectfully request that the Board of Directors of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Phuc province and the Board of Directors of the Vinh Phuc Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center provide me with the necessary conditions.” He will be granted leave from training starting January 1, 2025, at the request of his family and himself.

Which important tournament will Nguyen Thi Huong compete in in 2025?

To avoid disrupting the training of a talented athlete like Nguyen Thi Huong, the Vietnam Rowing Federation immediately took proactive action. The Federation sent a document to Vinh Phuc province requesting permission to accept Nguyen Thi Huong, following proper administrative procedures.

Even if Nguyen Thi Huong's former governing body does not respond in writing and no meeting is held between the two parties regarding her acceptance, the Vietnam Rowing Federation will officially include Huong in its membership list. If competing in domestic competitions, she will represent the Vietnam Rowing Federation. Currently, Nguyen Thi Huong continues to train diligently in Thuy Nguyen (Hai Phong), and her daily diet will be taken care of by the federation. In 2025, Nguyen Thi Huong will participate in two particularly important tournaments: the Asian Rowing Championships in China in April (where she has a chance to win a medal) and the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand in December (with the expectation of winning a gold medal).
