Unhappy situation

Over the past two weekends, July 19th and 20th, children in Hanoi spread the word and encouraged each other to buy tickets for the early screening of the animated film "Detective Conan: The Afterimage of the One-Eyed Man".

Some children who had just taken their high school entrance exams told each other that it was a "special screening, and the 50,000 dong ticket price was cheap." All of this shows the excitement of Vietnamese children for a "blockbuster" from Japanese cinema, and the children's film market remains a fertile ground.

"Detective Conan: The Shadow of the One-Eyed Man" officially premiered on July 25th and is likely to dominate the Vietnamese box office for a period of time, after reaching nearly 50 billion VND in ticket sales during its two-day early screening. About a month prior, another "Japanese blockbuster," "Doraemon: Nobita and the Adventure into the World in the Picture Book," also dominated the Vietnamese box office in the early summer. Released at the end of May, the 44th installment of the hit Doraemon series quickly raked in 45 billion VND in ticket sales in just a few days. This is not to mention the appearance of other "big-name" foreign children's films during the past two summer months, such as "Lilo & Stitch," "Elio: The Boy from Earth," etc.

One positive development during the past two summer months is that in 2025, the children's film market will no longer be dominated by foreign films in Vietnamese cinemas. On International Children's Day, June 1st, "Cricket: An Adventure to the Muddy Village," directed by Mai Phương and her team, officially premiered. Inspired by Tô Hoài's "Cricket's Adventures," the film received quite positive reviews from critics and audiences. Nearly a month later, another Vietnamese animated film was released in theaters: "Little Trạng Quỳnh - The Legend of the Golden Ox"...

Despite some encouraging signs, it must be acknowledged that this summer, like in previous years, foreign children's films continue to dominate the box office. Revenues are quite low compared to production costs, discouraging domestic filmmakers and reducing their enthusiasm for the children's film segment. Limitations in financial resources, technology, and scriptwriting mean that most domestic filmmakers lack the ability to produce films of sufficient quality and length to attract a strong audience of children and their families.

If we want to change this unpleasant status quo, it will certainly require the wholehearted cooperation of many parties.
