The new phenomenon: "KPop Demon Hunters"

The animated series "KPop Demon Hunters" premiered on Netflix on June 20th and quickly achieved record-breaking success. After 5 weeks of release, it garnered over 106 million views in 93 countries and territories. The series continues to maintain its popularity, adding another 26.3 million views in its sixth week.

“KPop Demon Hunters” features a unique and innovative storyline about HUNTR/X, a K-pop girl group from Seoul, who use the energy of their music to fight supernatural forces. HUNTR/X directly confronts the villainous Saja Boys, demonic spirits in the form of five young men.

Critic Tamar Herman argues that the film's success stems from its balance between traditional animated musicals and K-pop production styles. A key element is the jukebox-like musical experience, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of international concerts. The film generated a creative wave on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, as well as art communities and online forums where fans shared drawings, cover videos , cosplay, and dances inspired by the film.

“KPop Demon Hunters” brought success to two virtual bands, HUNTR/X (pictured) and Saja Boys. The film's theme song, “Golden,” topped the Billboard Global 200 chart, while the soundtrack topped the Billboard Soundtrack chart and reached the Top 8 of the Billboard 200. Additionally, eight songs performed by the two bands appeared on the Billboard Hot 100. Seven of the film's songs were among the top 15 most streamed songs daily on Spotify US. This is a rare achievement for an animated film and a record for a virtual band. Furthermore, many K-pop groups in the international market struggle to achieve these milestones, especially in the UK and US markets.

Singer Kevin Woo, who voiced the male character Mystery in "KPop Demon Hunters," also unexpectedly gained popularity. The success of the character Mystery helped Kevin Woo attract approximately 20 million streams of his music on Spotify, compared to just tens of thousands previously. With the success of Mystery, Kevin Woo had the opportunity to expand his music internationally and quickly access the American market.

“KPop Demon Hunters” became a phenomenon, and Netflix decided to capitalize on its success to create more products from the franchise. Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, considers “KPop Demon Hunters” a long-term brand asset, similar to Disney’s princess films. Netflix will invest in expanding on the original story. Accordingly, “KPop Demon Hunters” will have two more animated films and a live-action version. Additionally, there will be short films released between the main films.
