Question: What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
Answer: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that allows computers or electronic devices to “learn,” “analyze,” and “make decisions” based on data, mimicking how humans think, but in a machine-like way.
You can imagine AI as an electronic brain programmed to process information, analyze data, and perform intelligent tasks. However, AI doesn't necessarily have to be the robots you often see in science fiction movies.
In reality, AI can simply be software running on your phone, computer, or other smart devices you use every day. For example, when you chat with a virtual assistant like Siri or Google Assistant, or when Facebook automatically suggests friends, that's AI at work.
To operate effectively, AI needs to be provided with a large amount of data to "learn" from. Mr. Phan Phu Thuan, a cybersecurity expertat FPT Smart Cloud – a member of the FPT Group – gave an example: "If you want AI to recognize faces, it will be 'trained' with thousands of different facial images."
Once it receives data, AI will use algorithms—similar to complex mathematical formulas—to analyze and find patterns, rules, or relationships within that data. This process is called "machine learning." The more data it is given and the more thoroughly it is trained, the smarter and more accurate the AI becomes.
Or we can imagine AI working like teaching a child to identify apples and oranges. You show the child many pictures of these two fruits and explain the characteristics of each. Gradually, the child will be able to distinguish and correctly name each fruit when they see them.”
As we can see, AI is a technology that makes computers smarter, capable of doing things that previously only humans could do, such as understanding language, recognizing images, predicting trends, or creating new content.
Question: We often hear about generative AI, AI agents, and artificial general intelligence (AGI), three important terms in the field of artificial intelligence. So, how should we correctly understand and easily visualize these concepts?
Answer: Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence capable of generating new content such as text, images, music , or videos based on data it has learned. You can imagine it as a "digital artist," capable of creating new works from what it already knows.
For example, ChatGPT can write articles, answer questions, or compose poetry; Midjourney can create artistic images from written descriptions. AI generation is now widely applied in many creative and media fields.
AI agents are programs or systems designed to automatically perform tasks or interact with their environment to achieve specific goals. Examples include chatbots that answer customer inquiries or software that helps you organize emails. AI agents can be seen as "intelligent assistants" that help humans handle repetitive tasks or those requiring quick responses.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a concept referring to a type of AI capable of learning, understanding, and performing all intellectual tasks that humans can do – with a level of flexibility and creativity equivalent to or superior to humans. AGI is considered the "omnipotent brain" of the future. AGI remains a long-term research goal, as most current AI systems can only effectively handle specific tasks and have not yet reached the level of general thinking possessed by humans.
The AI ecosystem can be broadly summarized as a versatile team: "artists" (Generative AI) create creative content, "intelligent assistants" (AI Agents) support daily tasks, and future "all-powerful brains" (AGI) can do everything like humans. Clearly, the rapid development and increasing usefulness of AI technology has raised the question: Will humans become unemployed when AI has the ability to replace humans in many jobs? According to Mr. Nguyen Tu Quang, Chairman of the AI Ethics Committee of VINASA: "Artificial intelligence is a type of machine, created by humans to serve themselves."
Artificial intelligence is a part of human intelligence. Machines or artificial intelligence do not stop the process of human evolution. On the contrary, society will certainly develop even further.
