For a long time, the image of monks in brown robes and Buddhist followers guiding people on how to properly release fish and participating in cleaning up the Ky Cung River during the Tet Ong Cong, Ong Tao (23rd day of the 12th lunar month) festival has become familiar to people in the province. Ms. Hoang Thi Le, a resident of Luong Van Tri ward, shared: "Every year, on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, I go to the Ky Cung River to release fish to bid farewell to Ong Cong, Ong Tao. For many years now, I have seen the monks and Buddhist followers of Thanh Pagoda guiding people on how to release fish and collect discarded plastic bags and ashes from votive offerings. Everyone happily follows along, preserving the beautiful tradition while protecting the environment."
This simple yet beautiful image is a vivid testament to the spirit of "living a good life and upholding virtuous conduct" that the provincial Buddhist community has persistently cultivated. Sharing about this approach, Venerable Thich Quang Truyen, Head of the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in the province, said: Since its establishment, the Provincial Buddhist Sangha has always been closely connected to social life, steadfastly adhering to the motto "Buddhism – Nation – Socialism". Throughout this process, the Standing Committee has consistently focused on effectively disseminating the Party's policies and the State's laws so that monks and Buddhists become law-abiding citizens, actively contributing to building a more prosperous, beautiful, and civilized homeland.
With that spirit, over the years, the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Lang Son province has proactively coordinated with the Provincial Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Provincial Police, the Lang Son Provincial Youth Union, the Provincial Youth Union, the Provincial Red Cross, the police in the wards, the Provincial Association of the Elderly, etc., to integrate the dissemination of the Party's guidelines and the State's policies and laws; and to disseminate legal information to all Buddhist followers and people of all ethnic groups in the province during weekly and monthly religious ceremonies and lectures, as well as on major Buddhist holidays. As a result, in the period 2020 - 2025, the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Lang Son province organized nearly 500 propaganda sessions with over 130,000 Buddhist followers participating.
The gentle and benevolent approach to communication has helped Buddhists and the people understand and strictly abide by the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws, and actively participate in patriotic emulation movements and campaigns launched by the Fatherland Front at all levels, living virtuous lives; always being exemplary citizens and encouraging their children and relatives to comply with regulations in their residential areas and neighborhoods. Annually, over 95% of Buddhist families are recognized as culturally exemplary families.
Through awareness campaigns, people understand and actively participate in social welfare activities. As a result, from 2020 to the present, the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in the province has mobilized monks and Buddhists to contribute to the construction of 60 solidarity houses and 21 "An Lac" bridges in disadvantaged areas; raised over 9 billion VND for charity and social welfare work; and awarded thousands of scholarships and gifts to the poor and children with special circumstances. In particular, the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in the province also mobilized nearly 450 million VND to support the Covid-19 vaccine fund and frontline forces; and raised over 1 billion VND to build roads for border marker inspection.
In the coming time, the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Association of Lang Son province will continue to closely coordinate with the Fatherland Front and other departments and organizations to bring the spirit of "protecting the nation and ensuring the people's well-being" into every activity, with the hope that each Buddhist will not only cultivate goodness in their hearts but also perform good deeds in their lives, working together to build a more prosperous, beautiful, and civilized Lang Son.
