The effectiveness of the Thuan Bac black pig farming model.

As one of the five exemplary collectives to receive a commendation from the Provincial People's Committee for outstanding achievements in the patriotic emulation movement of the Farmers' Association during the 2018-2013 period, the Thuan Bac black pig farming branch in Loi Hai commune, following the value chain model, not only helps its members increase their income and stabilize their lives, but also effectively contributes to the poverty reduction program and the construction of new rural areas in the locality.

Mr. Nguyen Van Anh, the head of the association, said: The black pig farming association was established in 2015 and is headquartered in Suoi Da village, mainly comprising households with similar occupations. When it was first established, many households faced difficulties because they couldn't find effective production methods, and some wanted to switch to other livestock but lacked capital. Therefore, by joining the black pig farming association, members received training in breeding techniques, changed their production mindset, and received capital support to invest in breeding stock. As a result, many households have been able to rise out of poverty, and some have accumulated surplus from black pig farming and become more prosperous. Currently, the association has 19 participating households, an increase of 2 households compared to the initial start.

Mr. Anh further shared that his family used to be struggling, relying mainly on rice farming for their livelihood, which was not very profitable. In 2016, he joined the black pig farming association of Loi Hai commune and received 30 million VND from the farmer support fund to invest in 10 breeding pigs. Each year, the black pigs reproduce twice, with 8-10 piglets per litter. After more than a year, the number of pigs in his family's farm increased rapidly. At one point, his family raised up to 150 black pigs, including 10 sows. With the selling price of piglets from 800,000 VND to 1 million VND per piglet during 2017-2020 and 120,000-150,000 VND per kilogram of pork, his family earned about 30-40 million VND after each sale. Depending on the weight and reproductive rate of his herd, he earns between 80 and 100 million VND annually, higher than his previous income from growing crops. After many years of saving, he has built a spacious house.

Mr. Do Ngoc Anh from Suoi Da village happily shared: "This is the sixth year my family has raised black pigs. Through the support of the black pig farming association and the Farmers' Association of the commune, my family has received capital to invest in raising black pigs, and has been trained in new techniques and disease prevention during the breeding process. Since we started raising black pigs, my family has had a stable source of income , averaging 50-60 million VND per year, which has helped us to improve our living conditions and escape poverty."

Loi Hai commune is home to a large Raglai ethnic minority population. Therefore, the black pig farming model implemented by the Thuan Bac Black Pig Farming Association has guided people towards concentrated farming, building barns, and investing in expanding herds for commercial purposes. This is considered an effective solution to help the people overcome poverty.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hop, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Loi Hai commune: Of the nearly 1,000 farmer members in the commune, over 70% have chosen black pigs as their livestock for economic development. Generally, households have shifted from free-range farming to raising pigs within fenced gardens to limit disease outbreaks and ensure environmental hygiene. Black pigs are now the main livestock providing a significant source of income, helping farmers escape poverty and contributing to reducing the poverty rate in the commune to just over 2%, and the near-poverty rate to 7%,...

Many farmers say that although the price of black pigs is no longer as high as before, the Thuan Bac black pig brand is well-known in many places, so even if the price of live pigs drops, farmers can still maintain their herds. This is because black pigs mainly eat grass, vegetables, and agricultural by-products, thus reducing feed costs. In addition, black pigs have relatively good resistance to disease, minimizing the risk of outbreaks during rearing, and their rapid reproduction rate makes it easier for farmers to restock and requires less care compared to other pig breeds.

To continue maintaining and enhancing the effectiveness of professional associations in the commune, in the coming time, the Farmers' Association of Loi Hai commune will continue to replicate effective livestock farming models among the people, while effectively utilizing the farmer support fund, focusing on building production linkages to increase product value, contributing to creating stable outlets so that farmers can increase their income.
