According to Opta , Arbeloa made history by becoming the first Real Madrid coach to win all four of his Champions League knockout matches. These victories against Jose Mourinho's Benfica and Pep Guardiola's Manchester City secured Real Madrid's place in the quarter-finals.
According to AS , coach Arbeloa also became the third coach in history to defeat both Mourinho and Guardiola in the Champions League in the same season. This journey began in the play-off round, when Real Madrid defeated Benfica with a total score of 3-1 after two legs.
In the round of 16, Arbeloa and his players continued to show impressive form by defeating Man City with a total score of 5-1 over two legs to advance to the quarter-finals.
Before Arbeloa, only two coaches, Kasper Hjulmand and Raphael Wicky, had achieved a similar feat. Hjulmand did it with Bayer Leverkusen this season, while Wicky made a name for himself when he led Basel to victory over Mourinho's Manchester United and Guardiola's Manchester City in the 2017/18 season.
Having previously faced skepticism regarding his abilities, coach Arbeloa responded with a convincing performance from his players on the pitch. The recent victory against Man City puts Real Madrid in a strong position to face Bayern Munich, who beat Atalanta 6-1 in the first leg of the Round of 16, in the Champions League quarter-finals.
