The Chinese national team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after the third round of the Asian qualifiers. As a result, the team from the most populous country sacked their coach, Branko Ivankovic (from Croatia).

The most likely replacement for the Croatian coach is Shin Tae Yong. Indonesian and South Korean media report that the Chinese Football Association (CFA) is only waiting for Shin Tae Yong's official approval and signature.
If all goes well, the South Korean coach will lead the Chinese national team in July of this year to participate in the East Asian Football Championship. This tournament includes teams from China, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong (China).
Coach Shin Tae Yong was sacked by the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) in early January this year, paving the way for Dutch coach Patrick Kluivert to lead the Indonesian national team.
Despite losing his job in Indonesia, coach Shin Tae Yong is still highly regarded for his professional abilities. He previously led the South Korean national team to victory over Germany at the 2018 World Cup.
The fact that coach Shin Tae Yong was dropped by PSSI and replaced by coach Kluivert is believed to stem from the fact that the Indonesian national team now has many players of Dutch origin, rather than from coach Shin Tae Yong's lack of competence.
If Shin Tae Yong agrees to lead the Chinese national team, his task will be to build a strong squad for the country's biggest football team in preparation for the 2027 Asian Cup and the 2030 World Cup qualifiers.
