What Coach Troussier is missing

The Vietnam team has ended its first year with coach Philippe Troussier with 12 matches in all competitions.

The French strategist had a good start, winning all three first friendly matches against Hong Kong (1-0), Syria (1-0) and Palestine (2-0). However, the Vietnamese team struggled, losing eight of the next nine matches. There were acceptable defeats against strong teams such as Japan (2-4), South Korea (0-6), Iraq (0-1, 2-3), Uzbekistan (0-2). However, there were also defeats that left questions about the playing style and the use of players, such as the 0-1 defeat against Indonesia, 0-2 against China...

The Vietnam team is changing under Mr. Troussier.

Coach Troussier’s strength lies in his consistency in two philosophies: rejuvenation and building a controlling style of play. Whether facing an equal or stronger opponent, the players keep the ball to develop their style of play, strive to control the ball, and increase initiative in tactical operations.

Under Mr. Troussier, many young players have come to light, although previously these names were little known to fans.

However, there are still shortcomings of the French strategist that need to be frankly acknowledged. The ability to read the game to make appropriate tactical adjustments seems to be the missing part of Coach Troussier's "apple".

Coach Troussier can build a modern playing philosophy, encouraging his players to hold the ball more confidently. But to win a match, philosophy is not enough. Coaches need to read the game well to adjust flexibly, adapting and changing tactics according to the match situation, the opponent's playing style and the team's ability.

Coach Troussier is determined to follow the path he has chosen.

Another problem of Coach Troussier is the inconsistent use of players, constantly changing players according to each match. Early formation of suitable players according to the plan is necessary to maintain stability for the Vietnam team.

Who advised Mr. Troussier?

It is normal for Coach Troussier to have both strengths and weaknesses in football, as humans are inherently imperfect. The important thing is that the French coach has strong enough opinions and criticisms to make his decisions more accurate and objective.

Class, experience, consistent philosophy... are only necessary conditions for a coach to be successful. The sufficient condition is that the coach needs a quality team of assistants behind him.

For example, under coach Park Hang-seo, assistant Lee Young-jin is his right-hand man. While Mr. Park mainly manages the team at a high level, Mr. Lee takes care of direct professional matters such as training the players' techniques and tactics with other assistants, and giving feedback to Mr. Park when needed.

Coach Troussier has three foreign assistants, including Moulay Azzeggouarh Wallen, Hatem Souissi and Cedric Roger, along with a Vietnamese team including assistant Nguyen Viet Thang, analyst Le Minh Dung, and a team of logistics and translators. These are all highly regarded professionals, most of whom have worked with Mr. Troussier at the PVF Youth Football Training Center.

Coach Troussier has a huge workload to handle.

However, with a very heavy workload in both the national team and U.23, it is clear that the assistants need to argue more strongly and support coach Troussier in filling in his shortcomings to build the team.

A former V-League coach told Thanh Nien : "I want to see more of the team selected by Coach Troussier. The French coach's assistants will help him make more accurate and objective decisions, avoiding the situation where one individual manages too many tasks."

Responding to Thanh Nien about the next "move" for the Vietnamese team after the Asian Cup, expert Doan Minh Xuong said: "The Vietnam Football Federation needs to consult more with Mr. Troussier to plan strategies and playing style. We need to find a direction suitable for the Vietnamese team and then work together to build it, then find a clear path for each match and each tournament."

Talking about the issue of criticizing coach Troussier, commentator Vu Quang Huy shared: "I think the role of the National Coaching Council needs to be shown most clearly at this time. We support Mr. Troussier in his positive aspects, but we also have to frankly point out his limitations and shortcomings, helping the Vietnamese team to improve."

However, a coach shared with Thanh Nien that for a long time the role of the National Coaching Council has been quite vague, with no significant impact on the direction of the Vietnamese team.
