Coach Troussier needs more dissenting voices.

What Coach Troussier is missing

The Vietnamese national team has concluded its first year under coach Philippe Troussier with 12 matches across all competitions.

The French strategist got off to a good start, winning all three of his first friendly matches against Hong Kong (1-0), Syria (1-0), and Palestine (2-0). However, the Vietnamese team struggled, losing eight of their next nine matches. Some defeats were acceptable against strong teams like Japan (2-4), South Korea (0-6), Iraq (0-1, 2-3), and Uzbekistan (0-2). However, there were also losses that raised questions about the team's playing style and player selection, such as the 0-1 loss to Indonesia and the 0-2 defeat to China.

The Vietnamese national team is changing under coach Troussier.

Coach Troussier's strength lies in the consistency of his two philosophies: youth development and building a possession-based style of play. Whether facing equally matched or stronger opponents, the players consistently hold onto the ball to implement their style of play, striving for control and increasing proactiveness in their tactical approach.

Under Troussier's leadership, many young players rose to prominence, even though these names were previously little known to fans.

Nevertheless, there are still shortcomings of the French strategist that need to be frankly acknowledged. The ability to read the game and make appropriate tactical adjustments seems to be a weak point in Coach Troussier's tactical approach.

Coach Troussier may have built a modern playing philosophy, encouraging his players to be more confident in possession of the ball. But to win a match, philosophy alone is not enough. Coaches need to read the game well to adjust flexibly, adapting tactics to the circumstances of the match, the opponent's playing style, and the capabilities of their own team.

Coach Troussier remains steadfast in the path he has chosen.

Another problem with Coach Troussier is his inconsistent player selection, constantly changing players from match to match. Establishing a suitable lineup early on is essential to maintaining stability for the Vietnamese national team.

Who advised Mr. Troussier?

It's perfectly normal in football for Coach Troussier to have both strengths and weaknesses, as no one is perfect. The important thing is that the French coach's input and criticisms carry enough weight to make decisions more accurate and objective.

Class, experience, a consistent philosophy... these are only necessary conditions for a successful coach. The sufficient condition is that the coach needs a quality team of assistants behind him.

For example, under coach Park Hang-seo, assistant coach Lee Young-jin was his invaluable right-hand man. While Park mainly managed the team at a high level, Lee handled direct technical matters such as coaching players with other assistants on tactics and providing feedback on Park's strategies when needed.

Coach Troussier has three foreign assistants: Moulay Azzeggouarh Wallen, Hatem Souissi, and Cedric Roger, along with a Vietnamese team including assistant coach Nguyen Viet Thang, analyst Le Minh Dung, and a support and translation staff. These are all highly regarded professionals, many of whom previously worked with Troussier at the PVF Youth Football Training Center.

Coach Troussier has a huge workload to handle.

However, with the heavy workload at both the national team and the U.23 team, it's clear that the assistants need to offer stronger feedback and provide additional support to address Coach Troussier's shortcomings in building the team.

A former V-League coach told Thanh Nien newspaper: "I want to see more of the influence of the team selected by Coach Troussier. The French coach's assistants will help him make more accurate and objective decisions, avoiding a situation where one individual manages too many tasks."

Responding to Thanh Nien newspaper about the next move for the Vietnamese national team after the Asian Cup, expert Doan Minh Xuong said: "The Vietnam Football Federation needs to consult with Mr. Troussier more to plan the strategy and playing style. They need to find a direction that suits the Vietnamese national team, then work together to build it, and then find a clear path forward for each match and each tournament."

Regarding the criticism directed at Coach Troussier, commentator Vu Quang Huy shared: "I believe the role of the National Coaches Council needs to be clearly demonstrated at this time. We support Mr. Troussier in his positive aspects, but we must also frankly point out his limitations and shortcomings, helping the Vietnamese national team to improve."

However, one coach shared with Thanh Nien newspaper that the role of the National Coaches Council has long been rather insignificant, leaving no substantial mark on the direction of the Vietnamese national team.
