In the early morning of November 14, Portugal suffered a surprising 0-2 defeat against the Republic of Ireland in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. And the most important development was Cristiano Ronaldo's red card in the 61st minute.
In the penalty area, Ronaldo suddenly swung his arm at Ireland player Dara O'Shea. The sharp-eyed referee Glenn Nyberg spotted the incident and showed him a yellow card. But after consulting VAR, he changed his mind and gave him a red card.
Ronaldo left the field with provocative actions aimed at the audience, players and even the coaching staff of the Republic of Ireland team. Before entering the tunnel, he also argued with coach Heimir Hallgrimsson.
On social media, the Irish strategist was criticized for using the home field advantage to put pressure on the referee, causing Ronaldo to be shown a red card. He was also said to have instructed his players to constantly provoke and play dirty tricks to make the Portuguese captain angry.
After the match, Hallgrimsson shared the exchange between him and Ronaldo when the player left the field. He said: "He sarcastically praised me for putting pressure on the referee. It was his actions on the field that led to the red card. I had nothing to do with that, unless I controlled him. Ronaldo was stupid in that moment."
In the first leg between the two teams in October, the Republic of Ireland lost 0-1 to Portugal. Mr. Hallgrimsson at that time made a statement implying that the referee favored Ronaldo because he had won 5 Ballon d'Or.
That statement, along with his response to Ronaldo this time, turned Mr. Hallgrimsson into a "bad guy" in the eyes of many Portuguese fans.
