Raising bamboo rats - a new way to get rich in Lai Dong.Eating at night, sleeping during the day, needing almost no water, and primarily feeding on bamboo, sugarcane, corn, or elephant grass – raising bamboo rats is opening up a promising economic development direction for many households in Lai Dong commune. From a small-scale, spontaneous farming model, bamboo rat farming is gradually developing towards cooperative, sustainable production linkages. The establishment of an agricultural service cooperative has created a stable market and increased economic value for people in the highlands.

As one of the communes selected to implement the project of breeding Lai Sind cattle, Kiet Son has 41 poor and near-poor households receiving support. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Cuong, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: “The selection process for households receiving support was conducted openly and democratically, prioritizing households with available labor and suitable conditions for cattle grazing. The households were provided with breeding stock by the Lua Vang Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative and received guidance on care and breeding techniques.”

Ms. Dinh Thi Hien, residing in Zone 4, Kiet Son Commune, received a pair of breeding Sind crossbred cows as support more than two months ago. With the project's assistance, she carefully constructed a sheltered barn and prepared straw as feed for the cows to protect them from the cold. The cows are thriving thanks to proper care. Ms. Hien shared: "My family has many children and faces economic difficulties. Now that I've received these breeding cows, I'm very happy. I will take good care of them and hope to escape poverty soon."

The implementation of the project to breed cows and buffaloes in Kiet Son commune has contributed to supporting poor and near-poor households in developing their family economies, increasing income, and achieving sustainable poverty reduction for ethnic minority communities, effectively promoting economic policies and solutions suitable to local conditions.
