A rice-planting activity in Hangzhou, China, is attracting attention within Alibaba. The event was attended by founder Jack Ma and many senior leaders. The activity takes place as the Chinese technology giant is reshaping its strategy around AI.
According to Chinese sources, Liu Zhenfei, a partner at Alibaba and manager of the Amap mapping service, wrote a post on the company's internal network on June 22nd. In the post, he emphasized hard work and perseverance.
"The rules of the fields are simple. When the season comes, you must sow the seeds and endure long enough until harvest," Liu wrote.
The post refers to a recent activity in Hangzhou where Jack Ma and other Alibaba leaders went down to the rice paddies to sow rice seedlings. Those who participated included CEO Eddie Wu, CTO Wu Zeming, and chief scientist Zhou Jingren.
According to Liu, the group of a dozen people worked all morning. However, they only managed to plant half an acre of rice, and the rows of seedlings were not straight. He described the result as "crooked."
Nevertheless, Liu believes this experience has a positive impact. He writes that if you know how to take care of the soil, choose the right plant varieties, and do everything carefully, the rest can be left to time.
This message is noteworthy because Alibaba is entering a major adjustment phase. The group is seeking to focus its business segments on AI, an area Alibaba views as a long-term growth driver.
In early June, Alibaba established a new unit called Token Foundry. This unit combines the large language modeling team Tongyi Lab and the video creation tool developer Future Life Lab.
The restructuring also promoted Zhou Jingren, head of Tongyi Lab, to chief scientist. He also leads the Alibaba Artificial Intelligence Future Research Institute, which is responsible for advanced AI research and next-generation breakthroughs.
Last year, Alibaba committed to investing more than $53 billion in AI and cloud computing infrastructure over the next three years. Mr. Tsai also signaled that spending could increase further. According to him, Chinese companies need to continue to ramp up investment.
Jack Ma's involvement in rice farming is seen as a reminder of the importance of persistent hard work.
