DJI ushers in a new era with the Pocket 3. |
According to information gathered by Leifeng, the DJI Pocket 3 has sold over 10 million units since its launch in October 2023. This is a significant number for a compact handheld video camera. This success is attracting many Chinese technology companies into the pocket-sized gimbal camera market. Compared to traditional camera manufacturers, DJI far surpasses Sony, Canon, and Nikon in the video recording equipment category.
In an interview with LatePost, DJI CEO Wang Tao also confirmed this information. The Chinese company's leader further asserted that they have surpassed the Japanese company in the video recording equipment category.
According to Leifeng's sources, Pocket 3 sold 5 million units last year. Revenue from the product reached nearly 20 billion yuan ( US$2.95 billion ). To date, total sales have exceeded 10 million units.
Along with the strong sales of the Osmo 360 panoramic camera, DJI's handheld device group revenue is projected to exceed 50 billion yuan ( US$7.4 billion ) this year. Including the drone segment, DJI's total revenue this year could reach 85-90 billion yuan ( US$12.5-13.2 billion ).
Notably, DJI apparently did not anticipate this growth. Initially, the company only expected Pocket 3 sales of around 300,000-400,000 units. After the product was well-received, the target was raised to 1 million units. Ultimately, that number increased to 5 million units last year.
The appeal of Pocket 3 has attracted the attention of smartphone manufacturers. OPPO and Vivo are developing similar projects. Vivo already has a team of nearly 100 people. Their product could launch this year.
Honor has also been mentioned in news reports, but there has been no concrete product development activity. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is collaborating with Haohan to develop a gimbal camera. This product is positioned lower than DJI.
Not only phone manufacturers, but DJI's competitors in the compact camera sector are also returning to this market. A source told Leifeng that Insta360 has restarted the Pocket project.
Meanwhile, DJI is preparing to launch the Pocket 4. A source indicates the product could be released later this year. This timing may coincide with DJI's planned introduction of an panoramic drone.
However, there isn't much room left for upgrades to the Pocket 4. According to the article, the CMOS sensor on the Pocket 3 has reached its optimal level with the current design. It's also difficult to further increase the sensor size within the small body.
The reason Pocket is difficult to replicate lies in its mechanical design and heat dissipation. The device must fit a 1-inch sensor, image processing chip, and gimbal assembly into a very small body. It also needs to remain stable when shooting long video clips.
This forced DJI to develop many of the precision components itself. Leifeng said that the Pocket 3 was delayed by a year due to the problem of the motor inside the device. The product was only launched after DJI achieved a breakthrough in this technology.
