Everyone has dreams in life. For students from poor families, their dreams are very ordinary and simple: to be able to go to school like their peers.

However, for poor families, where even the daily necessities of food and clothing are still a problem, where would they find the money for school fees, textbooks, clothes, etc., for their children to go to class?

Therefore, the path to school for poor children and orphans suddenly becomes too long and arduous. Many students attend classes during the day and work as waiters in cafes at night; some high school students attend school for half the day and spend the other half searching for crabs and snails…

There are also those who cannot overcome hardship and have to say goodbye to books, school, and friends. The dreams and aspirations of their school days come to an end. It's a bittersweet and regretful decision, but there's nothing they can do about it, because they are powerless to change the situation.

The sorrow felt by the students and their parents is also a source of anguish for the Editorial Board, staff, and reporters of Ấp Bắc Newspaper (now Đồng Tháp Newspaper, Radio, and Television).

How can we help orphaned children and children from disadvantaged families continue their education? That question has been answered as Hung Vuong Joint Stock Company has agreed to provide financial support for Ap Bac Newspaper to award scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The "Wings of Dreams" scholarship program was born from that, initiated exactly 20 years ago by journalist Nguyen Thi Bach Van, former Editor-in-Chief of Ap Bac Newspaper (now Dong Thap Newspaper, Radio and Television), with the desire to be a bridge and a support for high school and university students to realize their dreams and aspirations.

Although the scholarship amount is not large, it serves as encouragement and motivation, helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds to strive for excellence in their studies and become useful members of their families and society.

In its initial phase, the "Wings of Dreams" scholarship was sponsored by Hung Vuong Joint Stock Company. In its second phase (from the 2021-2022 academic year to the present), the program is sponsored by Tien Giang Lottery Company Limited.

Over the past 20 years, the program has awarded more than 1,500 scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, providing them with the motivation to overcome adversity and excel in their studies.

What sets the "Wings of Dreams" scholarship program apart is its continuity and inheritance of scholarships from previous years; if students overcome difficulties and excel academically, they will continue to receive the scholarship until graduation.

Since then, many high school and university students have received scholarships for many years, graduated, and found stable jobs; among them, many are now doctors and engineers, and many are pursuing postgraduate studies or doctoral research.

The "Wings of Dreams" scholarship program truly serves as a bridge and a support system for students to realize their dreams and aspirations, contributing to the province's policy of promoting education and talent development, and building a learning society.
