Lien said that to achieve such academic success, she didn't attend any extra classes, mainly learning from school and self-studying at home, and utilizing resources on the internet. She focused on improving her English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Nguyen Ngoc Lien has always set her sights on excelling in her studies and securing scholarships to ease the burden on her parents. Her mother works at the Women's Association of Pho Moi Ward, and her father works in the railway industry; the family's livelihood depends solely on her parents' monthly salaries, which also cover her education. With her achievements, in 2019 Lien won scholarships from four American universities: Whiworth University (3.5 billion VND); Eimia College (2.4 billion VND); Whittier College (2.2 billion VND); and Fulbright University Vietnam (1.5 billion VND). Lien rejected three American universities and chose Fulbright University Vietnam (located in Ho Chi Minh City) with a 1.5 billion VND scholarship for four years to be closer to home. Lien will begin her studies in September 2019.
Ms. Dao Thi Tu, Lien's mother, shared: "From a young age, Lien has been conscientious in her studies, always self-motivated without needing reminders from her parents. Seeing her passion for learning English, my husband and I both supported and encouraged her. We always motivated and encouraged her, dedicating time and buying books and study materials for her, while also creating opportunities for her to participate in seminars on choosing foreign schools to study at."
Inspired by her friends' charitable ideas, Lien decided to launch a project in Lao Cai to help improve the lives of children in mountainous areas. Lien's project received support from her school and friends. Through fundraising efforts from agencies, organizations, businesses, and philanthropists, she raised over 100 million VND. In 2018-2019, as the head of the organizing committee, Lien successfully recruited 70 students from her school and other schools to participate in the "Tet with You" program at Lung Khau Nhin Semi-Boarding Secondary School (Muong Khuong) and Thai Giang Pho Ethnic Boarding School (Bac Ha). The program brought joy and intellectual opportunities to children in mountainous areas, fostering interaction, and providing over 500 gifts including clothes, hats, shoes, and warm blankets. Additionally, she donated a water filter to Muong Khuong District High School No. 3.
Nguyen Ngoc Lien shared: "For me, helping those around me and the community is not only a joy, but also a way of sharing love. I also hope that everyone will join hands to connect, share love, and help the community, especially those less fortunate and those with particularly difficult circumstances in life, particularly children in mountainous areas, so that they can study and have a better life."
