With rising tuition fees, don't make choices based on impulse.

For the 2026-2027 academic year, many higher education institutions are planning to increase tuition fees. This not only reflects the financial pressure on these institutions but also necessitates careful consideration by prospective students when registering for admission.

According to reports, tuition fees at many universities are trending upwards. Hanoi Capital University plans to charge 1.9 – 2.22 million VND/month depending on the field of study. The Vietnam-Japan University (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) increased the fee by 10 million VND/year for the Civil Engineering major, bringing it to 35 million VND/year, while maintaining the fee at 58 million VND/year for other majors.

At the Academy of Policy and Development, the projected tuition fees for the 2026-2027 academic year are also expected to increase significantly compared to the previous year: approximately 28 million VND/year for the standard program; 35-40 million VND/year for the high-quality program; and approximately 35 million VND/year for the international career-oriented program.

Furthermore, tuition fees vary considerably between different majors and universities, especially in priority development fields such as high technology. For example, semiconductors – considered a "cutting-edge" field in the digital transformation era – currently have tuition fees ranging from approximately 18 to 80 million VND per academic year. This cost reflects the significant investment required in infrastructure and a high-quality faculty.

Specifically, at the University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the tuition fee for the Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering Technology major and the integrated circuit design-oriented program is approximately 44 million VND/year/student. Meanwhile, at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the tuition fee for the Integrated Circuit Design major within the Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering major for the 2025-2026 academic year is 630,000 VND/credit for the standard program, and this may be adjusted in subsequent years.

Meanwhile, at the University of Technology ( Da Nang University), the Microelectronics - Integrated Circuit Design major has an estimated tuition fee of approximately 33.65 million VND/year. The Faculty of Technology and Engineering at Hue University offers an Integrated Circuit Design Technology program with a more affordable tuition fee, ranging from 16 to 17 million VND/year. This difference shows that candidates have more choices, but they should carefully consider the balance between cost and learning conditions.

The cost of university education is becoming a crucial factor in choosing university options. Therefore, candidates cannot rely solely on their interests or the "popularity" of a particular field, but must seriously consider their financial situation.

Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Higher Education Department (Ministry of Education and Training), noted that candidates should proactively research the admission information for the major and training institution they intend to apply to. Important details to consider in the universities' admission plans include the admission method, the subject combinations used, any additional requirements, and the estimated tuition fees.

Each school and each major has different tuition fees, and it's important to consider not only the first year but also the increasing rates throughout the entire course. A major with tuition fees of 40-50 million VND/year means the total cost could reach hundreds of millions of VND after 4-5 years of study, not including living expenses. Without a financial plan, students can easily become stressed or drop out of their studies.

Choosing a field of study should be based on one's abilities and long-term goals. Fields like semiconductor microchips, while expensive, offer attractive job opportunities and high salaries in the future. If the field doesn't match one's abilities, pursuing it could become a burden.

In addition, applicants should proactively seek out support resources such as scholarships, tuition fee waivers, or student loans. Many universities now have quite good support policies, but only those who proactively seek them out can take advantage of them.

Candidates need to be level-headed and consider all aspects—costs, abilities, and career opportunities—to make the right choice. A sound decision right from the application stage will help minimize risks and create a solid foundation for the future.
