Scientific conference "Dong Son culture"

The scientific conference “Dong Son Culture - 100 years of discovery, preservation and promotion of values” is urgent and has practical significance in supplementing valid scientific arguments, in order to affirm the position, role and important historical significance of Dong Son Culture in the historical process of the nation in general and of Thanh Hoa homeland in particular over the past 100 years.

Overview of the workshop.

On the morning of August 9, Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee organized a scientific workshop "Dong Son Culture - 100 years of discovery, preservation and promotion of values".

Attending the workshop were Comrade Dau Thanh Tung, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Thanh Hoa City, Institute of Archaeology, National Cultural Heritage Council, Vietnam Archaeological Association; departments, branches, units, localities in the province; universities, researchers, scientists from the Central and local levels.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Dau Thanh Tung emphasized that Thanh Hoa is a land that has left many strong historical and cultural imprints. The first excavation related to Dong Son Culture was conducted in 1924 in Thanh Hoa province by a Frenchman. It was not until 1929 that the excavation results were published in a report by V. Golonbew in the journal Far East Archaeology, volume 29 - Bronze Age in Bac Ky and Bac Trung Ky. In 1934, this great culture was named Dong Son Culture.

Dong Son culture is the pride of Vietnam in general and Thanh Hoa in particular. The issue of management, preservation of the past, present and future, and promotion of the value of Dong Son cultural relics in Thanh Hoa is an urgent issue. From 1960 to present, Thanh Hoa province has coordinated with the Institute of Archaeology, the Vietnam National Museum of History, Hanoi University of Science (now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities), relevant research agencies at the central level and provinces and cities across the country, ... to conduct many researches, surveys, and archaeological excavations and have discovered over 120 locations, nearly 300 relics of bronze drums, accounting for the largest number among provinces and cities across the country.

The most typical is the Dong Son archaeological site in Dong Son village (Ham Rong ward, Thanh Hoa city) - a typical site reflecting the continuous development from the pre-Dong Son period to the Iron Age - that is, throughout the entire period of nation building of our ancestors, right in the stratigraphy of the excavation pits, production tools, weapons,... made of bronze represent the relics of an archaeological culture of the early Iron Age.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee affirmed that the scientific conference "Dong Son Culture - 100 years of discovery, preservation and promotion of values" is an urgent scientific activity with practical significance in supplementing valid scientific arguments, in order to affirm the position, role and important historical significance of Dong Son Culture in the process of national history in general and in Thanh Hoa in particular over the past 100 years. From there, it helps generations, especially the young generation in Thanh Hoa to have a deeper understanding and pride in the traditions, history and culture of their homeland and country.

The workshop has a positive effect, effectively serving the work of preserving and promoting the value of Vietnamese cultural heritage, Thanh Hoa cultural heritage; promoting the image of cultural heritage and promoting the development of tourism, services, socio-economics; making an important contribution to the cause of building Thanh Hoa culture and people to develop comprehensively, becoming the driving force and endogenous strength to promote Thanh Hoa to develop rapidly and sustainably, soon becoming a rich, beautiful, civilized and modern province, a comprehensively developed province and a "model" of the whole country.

After the opening session, delegates and scientists discussed the basic achievements and prospects of 100 years of discovery and research of Dong Son Culture; pre-Dong Son - Dong Son relics in the Ma River basin; the living environment of ancient Vietnamese people through research on Dong Son cultural relics in the Ma River basin; ancient Vietnamese people in the Dong Son period through anthropological research; Dong Son Culture and early state; traces of Dong Son Culture in the South; Dong Son Culture from the perspective of special national relics.

At the same time, some delegates proposed solutions to preserve and protect the Dong Son archaeological relic cluster; recommended that Thanh Hoa province complete the dossier to propose recognition of the Dong Son archaeological relic cluster as a special national relic in Thanh Hoa; build a Dong Son Culture Museum in Thanh Hoa; and implement investigation, research and seminar programs on Dong Son Culture. This is of great significance to affirming the origin and value of Dong Son Culture and the Dong Son archaeological relic cluster in the process of formation and development of Vietnamese culture as well as the work of preserving, promoting and developing the value of Dong Son archaeological relic cluster and Dong Son Culture in the coming time.
