The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has reviewed the results of the "Pilot Program for Health Check-ups and Early Detection of Non-Communicable Diseases in the Elderly in Ho Chi Minh City in 2023". According to the report, hypertension and diabetes are the two most common diseases detected among the elderly.
Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, stated: From August 7th to September 26th, there were 70 Health centers in 22 districts and Thu Duc City participated in health check-ups for the elderly. More than 17,000 elderly people received health check-ups.

Accordingly, among elderly people living in Ho Chi Minh City, the leading health problems affecting their lives are hypertension (accounting for 51.30%), followed by diabetes (14.60%), asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (2.57%), a history of cancer (1.10%), signs of depression (2.85%), and signs of anxiety (1.98%).
It is noteworthy that during the health check-ups, a number of newly detected cases included hypertension (7.25%), high blood sugar requiring re-checking of fasting blood sugar (14.96%), suspected asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (1.11%), and suspected signs of cancer (2.62%).
Furthermore, through this pilot health check-up program, Ho Chi Minh City has, for the first time, collected data on the elderly. Specifically, the program recorded that 16.27% of the elderly showed signs of pre-disability, 0.45% showed signs of disability; 28.88% were at risk of falls; 1.60% were dependent on basic daily living activities (bathing, dressing, eating, hygiene, urination, and mobility); and 6.54% were dependent on daily living activities (ability to use a phone, shopping, preparing food, cleaning the house, and doing laundry...).
With these results, Ho Chi Minh City expects to take approximately 10 months to complete health check-ups for nearly 1 million elderly people in the city. Through these health check-ups, the health sector will also develop strategies for disease management and improve the health quality of the population, especially regarding hypertension and diabetes.
