Facial damage after 'snake' skin peeling treatment for beauty.

VnExpressVnExpress19/07/2023

On July 19th, Dr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, a member of the Vietnam Dermatology Association, stated that the patient came for examination in a state of discomfort, with the entire face burned and reddened.

The woman said that her skin used to have acne, large pores, and many uneven skin imperfections. After researching online, she was introduced to a natural skin peeling cream by a seller, which supposedly exfoliates like a snake, leaving her skin smooth. Skin peeling, also known as chemical peeling, involves applying chemicals that penetrate the skin's layers, removing old cells and promoting the rapid exposure of younger, healthier, and more beautiful skin underneath.

The patient spent nearly three million dong on a home-based skin peeling treatment. However, a day later, her face developed red, painful lesions. The salesperson advised, "The more peeling this method does, the better, and your skin will look beautiful faster."

After two weeks, the burning sensation spread across the face, causing discomfort, with many areas developing pus, scabs, and peeling skin, at which point the patient finally sought medical attention from a dermatologist.

Dr. Thanh diagnosed the patient with dermatitis, irritation, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation complications, with a risk of long-term darkening and scarring due to excessive peeling using strong exfoliating chemicals. The doctor determined that the recovery process would be lengthy, requiring expensive technologies and methods, and even then, complete restoration to the previous condition would be difficult.

Skin peeling is a popular beauty treatment among women, and it yields good results when performed under the supervision of a doctor. However, buying products of unknown origin to peel the skin yourself or undergoing the treatment at unqualified spas or facilities can cause complications such as burns, inflammation, hyperpigmentation, thinning skin, and sometimes even unsightly scars and permanent discoloration.

Dr. Thanh advises women to have a proper skincare routine and choose suitable beauty methods, avoiding the use of unknown ingredients or mixed creams. Each skin type requires specific products and indications. If people wish to undergo beauty treatments, they should go to medical facilities with dermatologists for guidance and advice to avoid wasting money and suffering negative consequences.
