Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, not only because of its distinctive flavor but also because of its ability to help you stay alert.

Many previous studies have shown that coffee may contribute to reducing the risk of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and some types of cancer.

Recently, a study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders added another noteworthy benefit of coffee, especially in the context of modern, stressful life: supporting improved mental health.

The large-scale study lasted more than a decade.

Scientists from Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai (China) analyzed data from 461,586 people, with an average age of 57, from the UK Biobank. All had stable mental health at the start and were followed for approximately 13.4 years, reporting their daily coffee consumption.

Those who drink 2-3 cups a day have better moods, experience less stress, and have a lower risk of mental health problems.

2-3 cups of coffee a day: A "plus" for your mood.

The results showed that people who drank coffee in moderation, about 2-3 cups a day, had better moods, reduced stress effectively, and a lower risk of mental health problems compared to the group who did not drink coffee or drank too much, according to the science news site Science Alerti .

Drinking too much can be counterproductive.

Conversely, those who consume five or more cups of coffee per day have a higher risk of mood disorders. This suggests that excessive coffee consumption not only offers no benefits but can also negatively impact mental health.

Caffeine isn't the only thing that offers benefits.

Notably, both ground coffee, instant coffee, and decaffeinated coffee showed positive effects, even more pronounced in men. Researchers suggest that coffee contains numerous bioactive compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties and influence brain regions associated with emotions and stress.

Drinking properly can be good for your mental health.

Based on the research findings, experts conclude that moderate coffee consumption can be a simple yet beneficial habit for improving mood and reducing the risk of anxiety and depression. In many cases, just 2-3 cups of coffee a day are enough to provide noticeable benefits to mental health.
