Last week, Huawei officially introduced the Mate 70 at an event in Shenzhen, China. Richard Yu, President of Huawei's consumer business group, called them "the most powerful Mate phones in history," but did not mention any details about the processor inside.
According to TechInsights , Huawei's new lineup includes the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro+, and Mate 70 RS, which are powered by the Kirin 9010 and 9020 processors designed by HiSilicon. The tech site said the chips "perform worse" than rivals like Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ and MediaTek's Dimensity 9200. This greatly affects the Mate 70's competitiveness in the high-end segment.

In addition, running the HarmonyOS Next operating system developed by Huawei itself is also a weakness of the Mate 70. According to Reuters, the company's new smartphone will not run any Android applications and will not have any hardware from the US, after half a decade of embargo.
The Chinese domestic operating system currently has more than 15,000 apps. Huawei plans to expand the app store to 100,000 software in the coming months. It is expected that from 2025, all of its phones and tablets will run HarmonyOS Next.
TechInsights estimates that limiting users to Huawei's ecosystem could limit the appeal of the product outside of China. There is no word yet on whether the Mate 70 will be sold internationally.
TechInsights predicts Mate 70 sales will reach 3 million units in Q4, accounting for about 22% of all smartphones sold by Huawei during the period.
Canalys's China smartphone market share report for Q3 2024 shows that Huawei is the second largest smartphone vendor, with shipments exceeding 10 million smartphones for four consecutive quarters. Market research firm Counterpoint predicts that the Mate 70 will quickly surpass 10 million units sold.
Despite Huawei's new strategies in the high-end market, global mobile growth remains uncertain due to geopolitical tensions and semiconductor supply constraints, according to SCMP .
