Huawei’s new laptop runs the latest HarmonyOS 5 (HarmonyOS Next) operating system and is equipped with a range of artificial intelligence (AI) features. Most of the company’s laptops currently on sale run Windows, although some models also have an option to use open-source Linux.
Securities Times quoted Huawei Tablet and PC President Zhu Dongdong as saying that the Celia AI assistant on laptops can perform tasks such as making slides, summarizing meeting content, and retrieving information from documents on the device.
HarmonyOS offers a range of software for work and entertainment, including WPS (a Microsoft Office alternative) and DingTalk. The laptop is also compatible with mobile apps like RedNote, Bilibili, and Feishu. By the end of the year, the device is expected to support more than 2,000 apps, according to Nanfang Daily .
The interface of laptops running HarmonyOS will combine elements between PC and smartphone, including a shortcut bar at the bottom of the screen similar to the Dock on macOS, and the home screen displays shortcuts to programs as icons, cards or folders.

Xinhua News Agency reported that Huawei will officially sell HarmonyOS laptops on May 19.
The device was unveiled by Zhu at a private event in Shenzhen, where Huawei is headquartered. With this new laptop, Huawei has “fully entered the HarmonyOS era.” Huawei’s press release said it took the company five years to bring the HarmonyOS computer from prototype to market.
Huawei has been developing HarmonyOS since 2015 and officially launched it in 2019. Last year, the company announced the Mate 70, its first smartphone to use an operating system that is not compatible with Google Android. In March, it also launched another HarmonyOS phone, the foldable Pura X.
Huaan Securities research has shown that HarmonyOS computers are capable of filling the gaps in domestic computer operating systems for more than 30 years. The global PC market is currently dominated by Windows, macOS and Linux.
According to researcher Wang Peng of the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, HarmonyOS on PCs will help Beijing reduce its dependence on foreign operating systems, reduce the risk of supply disruptions, and improve the resilience of the domestic PC industry to external uncertainties.
In the Chinese smartphone market, HarmonyOS accounted for 19% of the market share in Q4/2024, according to research firm Counterpoint. This is the fourth consecutive quarter that HarmonyOS has surpassed iOS in market share. However, Android is still the dominant mobile platform with a market share of 64%.
According to the People's Daily (China), the HarmonyOS ecosystem is currently present on 1 billion devices with 7.2 million developers and more than 110 million lines of code.
