Huawei's new laptop models run the latest HarmonyOS 5 (HarmonyOS Next) operating system and are equipped with a range of artificial intelligence (AI) features. Most of the company's laptops currently on sale run Windows, although some models offer an open-source Linux option.
According to the Securities Times , Zhu Dongdong, president of Huawei's tablet and PC division, revealed that the Celia AI assistant on laptops can perform tasks such as creating slides, summarizing meeting content, and retrieving information from documents on the computer.
HarmonyOS offers a range of software for work and entertainment, such as WPS (a Microsoft Office replacement) and DingTalk. The laptop is also compatible with mobile applications like RedNote, Bilibili, and Feishu. By the end of the year, the device is expected to support more than 2,000 applications, according to Nanfang Daily .
The interface of a laptop running HarmonyOS will combine elements of both PCs and smartphones, including a shortcut bar at the bottom of the screen similar to the Dock on macOS, and a home screen displaying program shortcuts as icons, tabs, or folders.

Xinhua News Agency reported that Huawei will officially begin selling its HarmonyOS laptop on May 19th.
The device was unveiled by Mr. Zhu at a private event in Shenzhen, where Huawei is headquartered. With this new laptop model, Huawei has “fully entered the HarmonyOS era.” A Huawei press release stated that the company spent five years bringing the HarmonyOS computer from prototype to market.
Huawei has been developing its HarmonyOS operating system since 2015 and officially launched it in 2019. Last year, the company announced the Mate 70, its first smartphone using an operating system incompatible with Google Android. In March, another HarmonyOS phone was also released: the Pura X foldable phone.
Research by Huaan Securities has shown that HarmonyOS computers have the potential to fill the gaps in the domestic computer operating system that have existed for over 30 years. The global PC market is currently dominated by Windows, macOS, and Linux.
According to researcher Wang Peng of the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences , HarmonyOS on PCs will help Beijing reduce its dependence on foreign operating systems, mitigate the risk of supply chain disruptions, and improve the resilience of the domestic PC industry to external uncertainties.
In the Chinese smartphone market, HarmonyOS held a 19% market share in Q4 2024, according to research firm Counterpoint. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter that HarmonyOS has surpassed iOS in market share. However, Android remains the dominant mobile platform with a 64% market share.
According to the People's Daily (China), the HarmonyOS ecosystem currently has 1 billion devices with 7.2 million developers and over 110 million lines of code.
