The Hungarian leader said the agreement would expand rights to language, education, culture, and political representation for around 100,000 ethnic Hungarians living in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine.
According to the Hungarian leader, Kyiv has agreed to incorporate the agreed-upon terms into Ukrainian law in the near future. He stated: " If that is done, Hungary will support the opening of the first round of negotiations in Ukraine's EU accession process."
However, the Hungarian Prime Minister also emphasized that joining the EU is a long process. He stated that if Ukraine completes all 33 chapters of negotiations within the next 10 to 15 years, Hungary will hold a referendum to decide its final stance on EU membership.
The issue of the rights of the Hungarian community in Ukraine has long been a point of contention between Budapest and Kyiv, particularly after Ukraine enacted regulations strengthening the role of the Ukrainian language in the education system. The government of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán repeatedly cited this issue to oppose Ukraine's EU accession process.

In a related development, on the same day, representatives from the 27 EU member states launched the first round of negotiations with both Ukraine and Moldova. EU officials consider this a significant milestone on the path to European integration for these two countries.
According to the plan, the EU's common position will be adopted next week, paving the way for intergovernmental conferences with Ukraine and Moldova in Luxembourg on June 15. Under EU regulations, opening accession negotiating clusters requires the unanimous consent of all 27 member states.
