The Department of Environmental Health Management advises people, especially the elderly and children, to take precautions against cold weather, limiting outdoor activities when the weather is extremely cold and windy, particularly between 9 PM and 6 AM.

When going outside, you should wear warm clothing to protect against the wind, such as a coat, thick long pants to retain heat, a scarf, hat, gloves, socks, and a face mask.

Always keep your body dry, avoiding dampness, especially around the neck, hands, and feet, when going out and when sleeping to reduce the risk of colds.

Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke and charcoal smoke. Alcoholic beverages should be avoided, especially in mountainous areas, as drinking alcohol constricts blood vessels, increasing blood pressure and potentially leading to stroke or death. Avoid drinks containing stimulants such as caffeine.

Avoid showering after 10 PM, showering for too long, or showering in an unventilated area, as this can easily lead to heat shock and be life-threatening. Use warm water for showering and body hygiene.

It is necessary to maintain good oral and throat hygiene regularly every day, such as brushing your teeth before and after waking up; rinsing your mouth with warm water mixed with diluted salt helps disinfect the throat and reduce the risk of sore throat.

Wash your hands frequently with soap to remove germs; get vaccinated to prevent the flu.

Eating and drinking a balanced diet ensures the body has enough energy to withstand the cold. Daily meals should include all four basic food groups (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals). Those engaged in heavy labor, the elderly, and children need more carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins than in other seasons to increase body heat and fight the cold, especially supplementing with vitamins A and C to boost immunity. Avoid consuming cold foods and drinks, or foods taken directly from the refrigerator, as these can easily cause the body to become chilled.

People who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, musculoskeletal disorders, etc., must pay attention to adhering to medication guidelines and maintaining a reasonable exercise and nutrition regimen as directed by their doctor.

Regular physical exercise and sports activities help warm the body, boost immunity, and improve one's ability to withstand cold weather conditions.

Regularly check for weather updates on all media platforms.

Pay attention to your body's signals.

Pay attention to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, chest tightness, discomfort, numbness in the limbs, etc. If these symptoms appear, keep your body warm immediately and go to a medical facility for a health check.

Cold weather puts extra strain on the heart, so people with heart disease or high blood pressure should consult a specialist and follow their advice. Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended, even for young people and those without a history of cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure.

Be aware that prolonged exposure to very cold temperatures can cause hypothermia, especially in the elderly, frail individuals, those with chronic illnesses, malnourished children, and infants. Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. In infants, symptoms may include bright red or cold skin. Shivering is a crucial first sign of heat loss, so immediate warming is necessary.

When you catch a cold and experience symptoms like coughing and fever, you should see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. Do not self-medicate, especially with antibiotics.
