Apple took seven years to increase the megapixel count of the main sensor on the iPhone. Therefore, many experts believe that Apple will not change the iPhone camera in the near future.
However, according to the latest rumors, Apple will have a different kind of upgrade on the iPhone 15 Ultra, with a main camera that is significantly better than the 48MP lens of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
According to PhoneArena , reliable source Ice Universe revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 15 Ultra will use a new Sony sensor for its main camera. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is equipped with a 48MP Sony IMX803 sensor, while the iPhone 15 Ultra will have a Sony IMX903 sensor.
One of the key differences between the two sensors is that the iPhone 14 Pro Max camera has a 1/1.28-inch sensor, while the IMX903 is a 1/1.14-inch sensor.
In theory, a larger sensor is better than a smaller one because it's capable of capturing more light and detail.
Although a 1/1.14-inch sensor isn't exactly the same as a 1-inch sensor, according to Ice Universe, it will be nearly as good.
According to leaked specifications from last November, the IMX903 sensor will have twice the color saturation signal, helping to reduce noise and improve dynamic range.
Recently, many Android phones have been using 1-inch sensors, posing a significant challenge to smartphones with top-of-the-line cameras that rely on high megapixel counts and advanced imaging algorithms. A larger main sensor could potentially help Apple gain the upper hand against its competitors.
According to Macrumors , the iPhone 15 Ultra is also highly likely to be equipped with a new periscope lens with up to 6x optical zoom. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro may still stick with the 3x telephoto camera of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 15 series at an event in September this year, as usual. The new high-end iPhone models, the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 15 Ultra, are rumored to have many improvements including: the A17 chip; a titanium frame, a faster USB-C port, Wi-Fi 6E, more RAM, and a periscope lens,...
