A leaked source from China suggests that Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Pro will support 8K video recording, a significant upgrade from the 4K maximum resolution of the iPhone 16 Pro.
The Fixed Focus Digital account on Weibo recently revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro will be highly anticipated, as 8K video recording will be "within reach of users." And it seems this rumor isn't unfounded.
Has Apple tested 8K video recording on the iPhone 16 Pro?
Last September, a report indicated that Apple had tested 8K video recording capabilities on the iPhone 16 Pro, but the feature was not enabled. The reason is most likely due to hardware limitations in the current triple-lens camera system.

The iPhone 16 Pro features a 48MP Fusion camera and a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, while the Telephoto camera is only 12MP. Since an 8K frame requires approximately 33MP, the two 48MP cameras can shoot 8K, but the Telephoto camera cannot.
The report also stated that if the iPhone 17 Pro is equipped with a 48MP telephoto camera as predicted, then 8K video recording will officially appear on this device.
Numerous sources have confirmed that the iPhone 17 Pro will be upgraded with three 48MP cameras, including a telephoto lens. If this is true, it would be the first time all rear cameras on an iPhone could shoot 8K video.
Several competing smartphones now offer 8K video recording capabilities, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Google Pixel 9 Pro (via AI upscaling). While 8K isn't yet widespread in the content creation community, it still offers benefits worth considering.
For example, shooting 8K video with an Ultra Wide camera allows for 50% cropping while maintaining 4K quality. This is very useful for professional video editors.
Notably, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman revealed in February that Apple plans to emphasize upgraded video recording capabilities on the iPhone 17 Pro when the device launches later this year, although he didn't reveal any specific new features.
"In previous years, Apple primarily focused on the iPhone's photography capabilities. But this year, they will place more emphasis on video recording. The goal of the 2025 iPhone lineup is to attract the vlogger and video creator community, prompting them to switch from professional cameras to iPhones. Expect Apple to promote its most powerful video recording feature ever when the new iPhones launch in September," Gurman shared.
The 8K video recording feature could be one of the biggest highlights when Apple introduces the iPhone 17 Pro.
Apple has added video recording capabilities to iPhones over the years, including Action mode for image stabilization, Cinematic mode for professional-looking bokeh effects, and Dolby Vision 4K 120fps video recording for cinematic quality.
New camera design on the iPhone 17 Pro
Multiple sources confirm that the iPhone 17 Pro models will feature a completely redesigned rear camera system.
According to leaked information, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a horizontal camera bar design, similar to the Google Pixel series. This camera bar may extend horizontally across the back, with three lenses arranged in a triangle on the left, while the flash, microphone, and LiDAR sensor are on the right.
It remains unclear why Apple chose this design and what the extra space will be used for. However, this style has appeared in numerous recent images and 3D models, suggesting it may well become a reality.
Additionally, all four iPhone 17 models are expected to upgrade the front camera to 24MP, improving selfie and video call quality.
The new iPhone lineup will be launched this September. The 2025 iPhone models are expected to include: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, with many new upgrades, especially the Pro models.
