In recent years, manufacturers of foldable smartphones have continuously improved their designs, making devices thinner and lighter for easier handling and use. However, this approach has presented them with a major obstacle: insufficient space to integrate high-capacity batteries.

To address this, many manufacturers have switched to silicon-carbon batteries, which allow for increased energy density within the same size. However, Apple is reportedly not going to adopt this technology for its first foldable phone. Instead, the company plans to equip the iPhone Fold with a battery larger than even the iPhone 17 Pro Max, resulting in a thicker and heavier device—a trade-off that could lead to faster hand fatigue for users.
Is the iPhone Fold currently testing a 5,400–5,800mAh battery?
According to yeux1122 , a source who previously made accurate predictions about the battery capacity of the iPhone Air, Apple is currently testing the iPhone Fold with a battery capacity ranging from 5,400 to 5,800mAh.
Meanwhile, the eSIM version of the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 5,088mAh battery. Even if Apple chooses the lowest capacity in the test range, the iPhone Fold still has a much larger battery than Android flagships like the Galaxy S25 Ultra or Galaxy Z Fold 7.
The post also stated that the source was the same person who had previously provided accurate battery specifications for the iPhone Air – making the rumors about the iPhone Fold even more credible.
A previous report suggested that when fully unfolded, the iPhone Fold would look like two iPhone Airs side-by-side. Apple has demonstrated that they can shrink the iPhone Air's circuitry without compromising performance, while still making room for a 3,149mAh battery.
This suggests that applying a similar approach to the iPhone Fold is entirely feasible. However, the trade-off is unavoidable: the device would be thicker and heavier.
With foldable devices, which are already heavier than regular smartphones, adding a few tens of grams or a few millimeters of thickness will certainly affect the user experience, especially over extended periods.
However, Apple doesn't seem too concerned about the device becoming "thicker." Rumors suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max, launching next year, will also be thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, indicating the company wants to prioritize internal space for optimal battery life and heat dissipation.
On the iPhone Fold, increasing the thickness not only increases battery capacity for extended usage time but also opens the opportunity to integrate a larger vapor chamber. This can provide superior heat dissipation – an extremely important factor for foldable screens, which are prone to heat generation, and for demanding tasks such as video recording or gaming.
Expect many major changes from Apple's first foldable device.
There are currently no official specifications for the iPhone Fold's dimensions. However, a previous rumor suggested that the prototype version had: a 7.74-inch main screen when fully unfolded; and a 5.49-inch secondary screen on the outside.

Apple could easily adjust these specifications once it enters mass production. Many of the company's devices have undergone significant changes during testing before launch, and with a completely new product like the iPhone Fold , this is even more likely to happen.
Current information suggests that the iPhone Fold is a project Apple is investing heavily in, willing to accept trade-offs for better battery life and heat dissipation. However, the device's weight and thickness may be controversial when compared to competitors who have continuously optimized to be lighter.
However, if Apple's history is to be precise, the company tends not to rush, instead waiting until the solution delivers a better overall experience. The iPhone Fold may be proof of that strategy: not the thinnest, not the lightest, but more stable and durable.
Currently, the iPhone Fold remains just a rumor. But with the increasing number of leaks, this model is likely getting closer to becoming a reality.
