Similar to the low-cost iPhone SE series, the iPhone 16e series achieved its low price point by reusing components from previous iPhone models. This pattern is expected to continue with its successor, the iPhone 17e.
According to a recent report from The Elec , stemming from the fact that Chinese display maker BOE has won orders for this model, the iPhone 17e's OLED display is expected to reuse a 6.1-inch OLED panel with the same specifications from the iPhone 16e.
However, the notable upgrade is that Apple will "thin the screen bezel" of this component. Normally, changing the screen design is a big change, but The Elec believes that Apple can easily achieve this.
If the panel's circuitry is already designed with enough space around the edges to allow for bezel thinning, then bezel reduction would not require a costly panel redesign, which fits perfectly with the low-cost iPhone's cost-cutting strategy.
Another factor that hasn't changed is the thin-film transistor technology used for the display. The iPhone 17e is expected to still use the same LTPS technology as the iPhone 16e.
In addition to the screen border improvement, analyst Jeff Pu previously revealed that the iPhone 17e could be launched in early 2026 with an 18 MP front camera supporting Center Stage, similar to the high-end iPhone 17 series.
The new front camera is considered a big improvement over previous generations of iPhone SE. According to the description, the square sensor allows users to take photos or record videos vertically or horizontally without rotating the device. The Center Stage feature also automatically adjusts the frame, zooms in or rotates according to the user's movements during video calls.
