Evans leaves MU and decides to hang up his boots. |
Evans retired after 537 club appearances, including 241 for the Red Devils. He rose to prominence playing for Northern Ireland in 2006, in a historic 3-2 win over a Spain side that boasted a star-studded squad. The 18-year-old impressed as a left-back, helping to create one of the most memorable victories in Northern Ireland football history.
Evans made 107 appearances for his country, scoring six goals, and was a mainstay of Northern Ireland's squad at Euro 2016. At club level, Evans joined Manchester United in the 2008/09 season, competing with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. He stayed with the club for nine seasons, winning three Premier League titles.
Sir Alex Ferguson called Evans "the best defender in England" in April 2012, a testament to his importance to United's squad at its peak. Former teammate Keith Gillespie described Evans as a "Rolls Royce player" who was both powerful and elegant in his handling of the ball.
In 2015, Evans was unexpectedly sold to West Bromwich under Louis van Gaal. However, he quickly regained his form, winning the FA Cup with Leicester City in 2021, marking a career revival after leaving Old Trafford.
In 2023, Erik ten Hag decided to bring Evans back to MU on a free transfer. The decision was initially questioned but ultimately proved to be the right one as he helped the team win the 2024 FA Cup, with a 2-1 victory over Man City.
Last season, Evans played 13 times, scoring once in the Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham, but his playing time was limited by injury. Evans' departure means that for the first time since the 1973/74 season, United no longer have a player who played under Ferguson.
