Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of January 28, Dr. Pham Quoc Hung, who directly examined and supervised Nguyen Hieu Minh's surgery, said that the operation concluded successfully that morning at Van Hanh General Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City).
Hiểu Minh's right knee surgery lasted from 8:30 AM to approximately 10:00 AM, longer than usual because the surgical team had to intervene deeply in the knee joint. During the surgery, Dr. Hùng performed anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and treated the meniscus damage.
Following the surgery, Hieu Minh's health condition was assessed as good, with stable indicators and no side effects recorded. The U23 Vietnam defender will be discharged after 3 days for post-operative monitoring before entering the rehabilitation phase according to a specialized protocol for ligament injuries.
According to Doctor Hung's assessment, Hieu Minh needs about 8-9 months to be able to train again, while the time to compete professionally could extend from 9-10 months, depending on the treatment response and recovery process of each individual.
Previously, Hieu Minh was brought to Ho Chi Minh City by his family on January 27th. The surgery was scheduled for January 29th but was moved up one day.
Hieu Minh suffered an injury during the U23 Vietnam vs. U23 China match on January 20th in the semi-finals of the 2026 U23 Asian Championship. He tore the ligaments in his right knee after a challenge with an opposing player near the corner flag and was taken straight to the hospital.
Born in 2004 in Hanoi , Hieu Minh is a key central defender for PVF-CAND Club and the Vietnam U23 team. He started and made important contributions to every match in the journey to win the gold medal at the SEA Games 33 and the 2026 U23 Asian Championship finals before suffering an injury.
