Jonny Evans has returned to Manchester United. |
The 38-year-old former Northern Ireland centre-back is expected to assist Fletcher in preparations for the midweek Premier League match against Burnley, just two days after Amorim was officially sacked.
Evans was appointed head of the club's loan and player development program last summer after retiring, but left the position last month. However, he is set to make a comeback as Manchester United need short-term stability on the coaching bench.
Fletcher has been tasked with leading the first team during the transition period and is likely to remain in charge until the club appoints another interim manager. Manchester United's board is expected to announce Amorim's long-term successor only next summer, in order to allow more time for assessment and a comprehensive restructuring.
Following their away trip to Turf Moor, MU will host Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup on Sunday, before facing Manchester City in the Manchester derby on January 17th, a series of matches seen as a crucial test for the Fletcher-Evans partnership.
Fletcher and Evans were teammates at Old Trafford for nine years before leaving the club together to join West Bromwich Albion in 2015. Evans, in particular, made a total of 241 appearances for Manchester United, rising through the academy and being part of the golden generation under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning three Premier League titles, one Champions League, one Club World Cup, one FA Cup, and two League Cups.
Besides his two stints with Manchester United, Evans also played for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City, and earned 107 caps for the Northern Ireland national team. His return this time brings experience and continuity, in an effort to stabilize the Manchester United dressing room during a turbulent period.
