Opening Ceremony of the National Conference on Organ Transplantation

Đảng Cộng SảnĐảng Cộng Sản12/10/2024

The organizing committee honored the units and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the organ transplantation cause in Vietnam.

The conference was attended by professors, doctors, and leading experts in the field of organ transplantation from Vietnam and several other countries and territories; representatives from functional agencies and units; and many hospitals.

According to the conference organizers, organ transplantation is the greatest miracle of medicine and one of the 12 greatest scientific inventions of humanity in the 20th century. From the first successful kidney transplant in 1992 at the Military Medical Academy, organ transplantation has now become a routine technique in Vietnam, with technical expertise catching up to the world. In fact, the organ transplantation sector in Vietnam has achieved many successes that have earned the admiration of the world, despite starting decades later. Particularly since the early 21st century, Vietnam has had a large number of transplant facilities and a highly skilled workforce. Transplantation of large organs in the abdomen, chest, cornea, limbs, bone marrow, stem cells, etc., has progressed to the level of other countries in the region.

Speaking at the conference, Lieutenant General, Associate Professor, Nguyen Xuan Kien, Director of the Military Medical Academy, said that the conference was hosted and co-organized by the Academy and was a key activity in the 2024 Organ Donation and Transplantation Week. With a tradition of being a pioneer in the field of organ transplantation in Vietnam, the Military Medical Academy is currently one of the four leading organ transplantation centers in the country and the military. The Academy's organ transplantation projects won the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology in 2005.

Lieutenant General, Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Xuan Kien, Director of the Military Medical Academy, provided information at the conference.

In particular, in December 2022, the Military Medical Academy assisted the Central Hospital 103 of the Lao People's Army in successfully performing kidney transplants on the first two patients. This event marked a historic turning point, opening a new chapter for organ transplantation in Laos in particular and the Lao health sector in general.

According to Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Kien, the conference included more than 130 high-quality scientific reports from domestic authors and 9 delegates who are professors and leading experts in organ transplantation from countries with developed medical systems, with one plenary session and 15 in-depth thematic sessions on organ transplantation.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Kien emphasized that this conference is a good opportunity for scientists and medical staff to share research results, exchange expertise, and share experiences in the field of organ transplantation, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that patients benefit from the most effective and safe treatment methods.

This is also an occasion to express gratitude to previous generations of doctors who not only actively contributed to saving lives but also wholeheartedly passed on their passion for the "nurturing of human resources" to their students, the future generations of young doctors, especially in the field of organ transplantation.
