The eastern sub-region of An Giang has the advantage of developing a large agricultural production area, with a favorable river system for developing high-tech agricultural models, smart agriculture, and the application of biotechnology, digital technology, and automation throughout the entire production value chain. Furthermore, the sub-region is also a center for integrated high-tech agricultural production for the entire Mekong Delta region.
According to the Director of the Department of Finance, Pham Minh Tam, the eastern sub-region of An Giang is oriented towards investing in a comprehensive and modern agricultural logistics system, including: cold storage facilities, preservation centers, distribution centers, transportation infrastructure, and e-commerce platforms to serve agricultural product consumption. Infrastructure connecting the sub-region with major economic centers such as Can Tho City and Ho Chi Minh City is being systematically invested in, thereby reducing logistics costs, improving the efficiency of goods circulation, and enhancing the competitiveness of the entire region.
Long Xuyen city is oriented towards developing into a knowledge-based, green, and modern city, playing a central role in education , training, scientific research, and innovation for the province; focusing on investing in the development of universities, research institutes, technology transfer centers, innovation incubators, and support services for high-tech agricultural businesses. “In the coming time, the eastern sub-region needs to continue to promote the improvement of the investment and business environment, focusing on preparing clean land funds, completing technical and urban infrastructure, especially the infrastructure of industrial zones and clusters; at the same time, strengthening the promotion and attraction of strategic investors, large-scale projects, and high-tech projects to increase the proportion of capital and the efficiency of land use, thereby affirming its role as a driving force for the province's economic development,” Mr. Pham Minh Tam suggested.
Over the past period, communes and wards in the eastern sub-region have promptly and synchronously implemented the policies and resolutions of the Central Government and the province; the tasks and solutions set forth have been basically implemented strictly and achieved many positive results in various fields. Total budget revenue in the entire region reached 26.13%.
However, production scale remains small and fragmented, economic restructuring is slow, heavily reliant on agriculture, and highly susceptible to market fluctuations and price increases. Businesses, cooperatives, and individual entrepreneurs face numerous difficulties; budget revenue in some localities is low and falls short of targets. Compensation and land clearance are slow; the progress of implementation and disbursement of public investment capital in some localities is unsatisfactory. Infrastructure in some localities is inadequate and not synchronized, affecting the effectiveness of socio-economic development.
Tran Minh Nhut, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of My Thoi Ward, proposed the need for comprehensive planning and investment in technical infrastructure, especially a shared logistics infrastructure system for the eastern sub-region... In response to this issue, the Department of Industry and Trade stated that the proposal for planning a logistics center in the locality is entirely consistent with the logistics infrastructure development orientation approved by the Provincial People's Committee. Specifically, a regional logistics center is planned in My Thoi Ward with an area of 50,000 m² .
To unlock its potential, the communes and wards in the eastern sub-region are developing according to an industrial-urban-service orientation linked to the province's driving force center, with the Long Xuyen central urban area serving as the core for diffusion. The sub-region is promoting the development of processing and manufacturing industries, especially agricultural and aquatic product processing; forming and developing industrial clusters and processing plant clusters linked to raw material areas.
Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung noted that the eastern sub-region has sufficient land and human resources for future development; its diverse planning has potential for development in agriculture, industry, and university urban areas. The sub-region enjoys favorable transportation conditions, situated on two east-west axes connecting with Dong Thap province and Can Tho city… This is a significant advantage in terms of human resources and land for future development if effectively exploited. Mr. Ho Van Mung requested that the leaders of the 25 communes and wards in the eastern sub-region be proactive, dynamic, and enhance their sense of responsibility in management and administration. At the same time, they should leverage the sub-region's advantages to develop socio-economic aspects, attract investment, improve infrastructure, and contribute to achieving double-digit economic growth targets.
