To develop 5G, carriers worldwide should focus on four key elements: high-quality networks, diversified business models, emerging services, and AI generation to seize these opportunities…
At the “5G Beyond Growth – Breaking Through Growth with 5G” summit organized by Huawei within the framework of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, Mr. Li Peng, Senior Vice President and President of Huawei's ICT Business and Services Group, shared insights on how carriers can achieve business success with 5G, as well as how 5.5G will continue to unlock potential and create new growth opportunities.
By the end of 2023, more than 300 commercial 5G networks had been deployed worldwide. 5G is growing at a rate seven times faster than 4G during the same period. A 2023 trial conducted by a reputable organization in key cities in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands showed that carriers using Huawei solutions ranked highly for network experience. Huawei has also collaborated with many leading global carriers and industry partners to find new solutions to meet the increasingly demanding requirements for 5.5G applications and scenarios.
Speaking at the “5G Beyond Growth – Breaking Through Growth with 5G” summit, Mr. Li Peng stated: “5G is on the right track to achieving business success. Five years after its commercial launch in 2019, more than 1.5 billion people are using 5G networks, while it took 9 years for 4G to achieve this. Currently, 20% of mobile subscribers worldwide are using 5G, generating 30% of total mobile traffic and contributing up to 40% of mobile service revenue. Furthermore, 5.5G is expected to continue its commercialization trajectory into 2024; and as 5.5G, AI, and Cloud combine, carriers can unlock the potential of new applications.”
Information from this conference indicates that mobile users are now willing to purchase upgrades to mobile plans to enhance their experience if the network quality is high. Traffic is expected to increase significantly, allowing carriers to maximize value. This has led to more and more carriers setting strategic goals in building high-quality 5G networks.
Several carriers in the Middle East have deployed Massive MIMO networks, delivering an optimized experience and driving the successful rollout of 5G FWA. To date, 5G FWA has connected nearly 3 million households, becoming a strong revenue growth driver for carriers.
Over 20% of global 5G carriers have adopted a tiered speed pricing model. A Thai carrier recently launched a 5G Boost Mode add-on, allowing subscribers to choose different speed levels to best meet individual needs, while also boosting the carrier's ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) by approximately 23%. Another Chinese carrier popularized a guaranteed uplink package, providing a smooth experience and high-resolution commitment for livestreamers, also boosting the carrier's ARPU by over 70%...
