The maritime economy is undergoing a significant shift.
Along with Phan Thiet City and La Gi town, Tuy Phong is one of the three major fishing grounds in the province, home to many valuable seafood species and specialties. Thanks to the active implementation of policies and strategies for developing fishing vessels and investing in modern technical equipment for offshore fishing, the number of large-capacity fishing vessels in the district has gradually increased year by year. While in 1983, the entire district only had 400 fishing vessels with a capacity of 56 horsepower, mostly small vessels, today, the number has exceeded 2,000 with a total capacity of nearly 250 horsepower, including 258 vessels with a length of 15 meters or more. In previous years, fishermen were only familiar with traditional, small-scale, manual fishing methods, but recently, the large-capacity fishing fleet has formed cooperative groups and teams at sea, investing in modern equipment and developing strongly, regularly venturing far out to sea to protect national sovereignty . Over the years, fishing activities have been favorable for local fishermen, with annual yields increasing significantly. Therefore, the fishing industry in this area has always been prioritized and continuously developed. The seafood catch in 2024 reached 55,450 tons, and in the first quarter of 2025 reached 14,920 tons out of 60,000 tons, achieving 24.87% of the assigned target and increasing by 128% compared to the same period in 2024.

The leaders of the Tuy Phong District People's Committee acknowledge that in recent years, the local marine economic potential has been increasingly exploited, and the lives of people in coastal areas have gradually stabilized and improved. The marine economic structure has shifted in a positive direction, with some sectors and fields developing quite rapidly, especially tourism . Models of offshore fishing linked to processing, logistics services at sea, and the protection of the sovereignty of the country's seas and islands are increasingly being promoted and replicated. In particular, the infrastructure of coastal and island areas has been gradually invested in and upgraded, and socio-economic development, national defense, and security have been relatively comprehensive.

Potential for coastal tourism
Besides possessing the province's only international shipping port – Vinh Tan port, Tuy Phong also has two bustling fishing ports, Lien Huong and Phan Ri Cua, which are lively anchorages for boats and seafood trading for local fishermen. Over the years, Tuy Phong district has made efforts to create jobs and provide vocational training for thousands of local workers. Vocational training for workers in coastal communes mainly focuses on: Captains, Chief Engineers (levels 4 and 5), and basic knowledge of navigation, hydrology, and modern fishing techniques. This contributes to improving their understanding and gives them the opportunity to apply their skills to fishing, processing, and increasing the value of seafood products.

With a determination to develop the local economy rapidly and sustainably, especially its marine economic potential, the leaders of Tuy Phong district are focusing on leveraging the potential advantages of coastal areas and strengthening investment attraction. In particular, they will concentrate on exploiting the potential of marine tourism, encouraging investment in the export-oriented seafood processing industry, and creating favorable conditions for fishermen to invest in developing large-capacity vessels for offshore fishing, equipped with modern technology. At the same time, they are actively implementing solutions to restructure fishing vessels, moving away from building new small-capacity vessels for inshore fishing and other fishing methods that negatively impact marine resources.
From there, we can choose the right direction, make good use of our existing potential and advantages, and gradually transform this sunny and windy land into not only the province's energy center, but also one of the most bustling and vibrant localities in terms of marine economy and beach tourism in Binh Thuan.
