Jadon Sancho's career in England is over. |
When Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho in the summer of 2021, Old Trafford erupted in celebration. After years of pursuit, the Red Devils finally brought Borussia Dortmund's brightest star to Manchester. The English player, then only 21 years old, was one of the most promising attacking talents in Europe.
Sancho called it "a dream come true." But just a few years later, it looked more like a failed story than a successful signing.
At 9 PM on March 15th, Sancho didn't even get to play when Manchester United faced Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the 30th round of the Premier League. This wasn't due to injury or poor form. Simply put, he was on loan from Villa, and Premier League regulations didn't allow him to play against his parent club.
A small detail, but it perfectly reflects Sancho's arduous journey since arriving in Manchester.
When an expensive contract becomes a difficult problem.
Manchester United have been pursuing Sancho since the summer of 2020. At the time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw him as the perfect fit for the right flank. However, the deal fell through because Dortmund refused to lower their price.
A year later, MU returned and successfully signed the English player. Ironically, Sancho arrived at Old Trafford just as things were starting to go off track.

The first problem arose almost immediately: playing position. MU wanted Sancho to play on the right wing. But the player preferred playing on the left wing. Meanwhile, the left wing was Marcus Rashford's "territory".
As a result, Sancho never achieved consistency in his role on the pitch. When Rashford's form declined in the 2021/22 season, Sancho was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. The following season, Rashford exploded with 30 goals and completely shut down the left wing position.
Sancho was pushed to the right wing, occasionally playing as a number 10, and sometimes sitting on the bench. A player who relies on inspiration like him would find it difficult to thrive in such circumstances.
The statistics clearly reflect the decline. In 79 games for Manchester United, Sancho only scored 12 goals and provided 6 assists. Compared to what he achieved at Dortmund, that's a huge difference.
In fact, since his last breakout season in Germany, Sancho has only scored 21 goals in 173 appearances for four different teams. A remarkable decline.
However, tactical issues were only part of the story. The real turning point came in the fall of 2022, when Sancho unexpectedly left the squad for several months. Erik ten Hag then stated that the player needed time to resolve personal and mental issues.
MU even arranged for Sancho to train in the Netherlands with coaches that Ten Hag trusted. This was an effort to help him regain his form.

Jadon Sancho's talent has yet to be fully realized. |
That patience didn't last forever. In September 2023, Ten Hag dropped Sancho from the squad for the match against Arsenal, stating outright that the reason was his training attitude. Sancho immediately retaliated on social media, claiming he had been made a "scapegoat."
The conflict erupted. Sancho refused to apologize. Ten Hag also refused to back down. The confrontation lasted for months and nearly slammed the doors of Old Trafford shut for the player.
Sancho was dropped from the first team and had to train separately. That was a clear sign that his journey at Manchester United had come to an end.
A lost talent
Sancho was then loaned to Dortmund and helped the German team reach the Champions League final. But Dortmund couldn't afford to buy him outright.
Chelsea tried their luck with a loan deal, but the results were no better. After 41 matches and only 5 goals, the London club agreed to pay a £5 million fine to return the player.
Currently, Sancho plays for Aston Villa. He is only 25 years old and theoretically still has his whole career ahead of him. Sancho's talent has never been in doubt.
Michael Carrick once said that Sancho's technique, ball control, and creativity were "natural and exceptional."
But top-level football is more than just technique.
It also includes discipline, mental fortitude, and the ability to adapt to a harsh environment. Sancho once had all of these qualities to become a major star at Manchester United.
Old Trafford is not an easy place to develop.
Sancho's dream began with applause. And now, it is ending in silence.
