Vietnam is preparing to reach a significant milestone as it hosts the IRONMAN full-distance triathlon for the first time. The main race day will take place on May 10th in Da Nang, making Vietnam the 32nd country in the world to host this grueling event.
The event was held concurrently with the 10th season of IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang , an annual race that has been running since 2015. Both were operated by Sunrise Events Vietnam.
The IRONMAN all-around race, also known as the 140.6 km race, consists of three consecutive events: a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride, and a 42.2 km marathon. It is considered one of the world's most challenging athletic day events, requiring a high level of physical fitness, energy management, and willpower from the athletes.
Beyond being a milestone in terms of organization, the tournament also demonstrates the strong growth of endurance sports in Vietnam. From over 1,000 athletes from 54 countries in its inaugural year in 2015, the IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang in 2026 is expected to attract over 3,100 athletes from 90 countries, the highest number ever.
Notably, over 300 athletes from IRONMAN's All World Athlete (AWA) program will participate. This group of age-group athletes boasts outstanding achievements globally, promising to raise the professional standards and competitiveness of the race.
In terms of competition conditions, Da Nang continues to be considered a suitable location thanks to its coastal infrastructure, favorable weather, and ability to host international events. The central area of the race is located at East Sea Park, which houses the swimming starting point, the finish line, and the IRONMAN Village.
Hosting the first full-fledged IRONMAN not only has sporting significance but also demonstrates Vietnam's capacity to host high-standard events. It also provides Da Nang with an opportunity to further solidify its position as a leading sports and tourism destination in the region.
For experts, this season marks a significant step forward for Vietnamese endurance sports on the international stage.
