Spaun won his first major.

unbelievable putt

JJ Spaun overcame a bad start, harsh weather conditions and tremendous pressure from tough opponents to make a spectacular breakthrough in the last two holes, closing the deciding round with a score of +2 (72).

With a total score of -1 after 72 holes, Spaun won the 2025 US Open in a spectacular way and became the only person to finish the tournament under par.

The "fateful" moment came on the 18th hole, when Spaun holed a 64.5-foot birdie putt in the midst of heavy rain - an incredible putt on a water-soaked green that sent the ball into the hole and opened the door to glory.

“When the ball was about eight feet away, I walked up to the line to see if it had a chance to go in,” Spaun said. “And it went in. I was really shocked. I couldn’t believe it was going in and it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so happy.’”

After the ball dropped into the hole, Spaun threw his club in the air, pumped his fist in celebration, and the crowd cheered wildly. He hugged caddie Mark Caren, then rushed to his wife Melody and two young daughters on the edge of the green.

The historic win at Oakmont earned Spaun a career-high $4.3 million, and certainly a place in the pantheon of major champions.

Courage to speak up

JJ Spaun entered the 2025 US Open finals just one stroke behind leader Sam Burns. However, he quickly fell behind after a forgettable start. In the first six holes, the 34-year-old golfer made five bogeys and fell four shots behind in the championship race. Hope seemed lost when heavy rain that lasted nearly two hours forced the tournament to be postponed. And that was the turning point for Spaun's journey.

“Coach Josh Gregory told me, ‘You’re trying too hard,’” Spaun said. “And it was true. I started out feeling like I could win the US Open, but it all fell apart so quickly. That break helped me reset.”

Back on the course, Spaun was transformed. He shot 3-under on the final nine holes, including a crucial birdie at the 17th, a 309-yard tee shot straight onto the green. Then a 3.5-foot birdie putt putted him into the lead.

On the historic 18th hole, Spaun holed a 64.5-foot putt into a soggy green. The ball rolled right, slowly but surely. When it dropped into the hole, Oakmont exploded.

“There he is!” exclaimed British golfer Tyrrell Hatton during an interview. “A fantastic putt to win. Unbelievable!”

According to statistics from Elias Sports Bureau, Spaun is the first golfer in US Open history to win the championship despite starting the final round with three holes over par, and is the fifth champion to end the tournament with two consecutive birdies.

Before his sensational win at Oakmont, Spaun had only one PGA Tour title to his name, the 2022 Valero Texas Open. This season, he has finished runner-up twice, including a dramatic playoff loss to Rory McIlroy at The Players Championship.

“I've fought like that my entire career,” Spaun said. “There were times when it seemed impossible, but I never gave up. And today, it paid off."
