Sixteen Olympic teams – China, India, Myanmar, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Hong Kong (China), Japan, Palestine, South Korea, Bahrain, Thailand, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan, and Indonesia – advanced to the next round after the group stage of the men's football tournament at ASIAD 19.

The South Korean Olympic team demonstrated their overwhelming strength in the group stage of the 19th Asian Games.

The men's football tournament features 23 teams, divided into 5 groups of 4 teams and 1 group of 3 teams. The top two teams from each group advance, along with the four best third-placed teams. When determining the final standings, the results of matches between the third-placed teams and the fourth-placed teams from the 4-team groups are disregarded.

The best third-placed teams to advance are Olympic Indonesia, Olympic Thailand, Olympic Myanmar, and Olympic Qatar.

The Vietnamese Olympic team – the only representative from Southeast Asia – was eliminated. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan's team finished third in Group B. However, they only earned 0 points – because the result against last-placed Mongolia was not counted – when comparing their performance against teams in other groups.

After the group stage, the South Korean Olympic team scored the most goals, netting 15 against their opponents. In addition, the team from the land of kimchi maintained a clean sheet. South Korea is considered a strong contender for the gold medal. They are also the reigning ASIAD champions.

The Round of 16 matches will take place on September 27th and 28th. Some notable matches include Olympic South Korea vs. Olympic Kyrgyzstan and Olympic North Korea vs. Olympic Bahrain.

Southeast Asian representatives are likely to face strong opponents in the round of 16. Thailand's Olympic team will clash with Iran's Olympic team. Meanwhile, Myanmar's Olympic team could meet Japan's Olympic team – the same team that played Palestine's Olympic team in the final group stage match. Indonesia's Olympic team is unlikely to avoid facing Uzbekistan's Olympic team.
