- In recent years, people in Khuat Xa commune have actively converted inefficient rice-growing land to watermelon cultivation. This has contributed to increasing people's income and improving production efficiency on the same area of agricultural land.

The family of Ms. Cam Thi Bich, in Lien Hop village, is one of the households that boldly converted their low-yield rice fields to watermelon cultivation, bringing in high income. Ms. Bich shared: "For about the past 5 years, my family has consistently maintained an area of about 1.2 acres for watermelon cultivation. From the beginning of the season until now, my family has harvested over 9 tons of fruit, with selling prices ranging from 10,500 to 12,500 VND/kg (5,000 to 7,000 VND/kg higher than last year), bringing my family over 100 million VND. From now until the end of the season, my family expects to harvest another 2.5 tons."
Not only Mrs. Bich's family, but many households in Khon Mo village also have an additional source of income from watermelons. Mr. Vi Van Thoi, Party Secretary and Head of Khon Mo village, said: "Out of 76 households in the village, nearly 100% grow watermelons on an area of about 10 hectares. This year, the price of watermelons is higher than last year, ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 VND/kg. From growing watermelons, many households earn from 30 to 50 million VND per season, and exceptionally, some households earn over 100 million VND per season."
According to data from the People's Committee of Khuất Xá commune, the entire commune currently has 31.5 hectares of watermelon. Watermelon cultivation is considered suitable for the local climate and soil conditions, resulting in high-quality watermelons from Khuất Xá with firm, sweet, and flavorful fruit, which are popular with consumers. As soon as farmers harvest, traders come directly to the fields to buy the produce.
To support the development of the local people, over the years, the People's Committee of the commune has coordinated with specialized agencies to organize training courses and provide technical guidance on planting and caring for watermelons. In addition, officials from the Public Service Center regularly monitor the production situation and advise people on caring for and controlling pests and diseases in their crops.
With the attention and support of the commune government, the people have also proactively applied science and technology to production, actively learning new knowledge and experience to improve productivity and product quality. On average, each plot yields 5-6 quintals/plot, and this year watermelons are priced at 10-15 thousand VND/kg, giving growers an income of 5-9 million VND/plot (depending on yield and selling price).
Mr. Hoang Trung Dung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Khuat Xa commune, said: In recent years, the watermelon cultivation model in the commune has brought clear economic benefits, contributing to increasing people's income. In the future, the commune will encourage people to develop concentrated watermelon growing areas, strengthen connections with businesses and cooperatives to build linkages in production and consumption of products. In particular, the commune aims to develop watermelon products that meet OCOP standards to enhance value, create a unique brand for the commune's products, contribute to expanding the market, stabilizing output, and increasing sustainable income for people.
