In Argentina's 2-0 victory over Austria in Group J of the 2026 World Cup, Messi opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a powerful shot. This goal brought the 38-year-old superstar's World Cup tally to 17, surpassing Miroslav Klose to claim the top spot on the tournament's all-time scoring list.
Not stopping there, the Argentina captain scored another goal in injury time of the second half to complete his brace, bringing his total number of goals in the World Cup to 18.
However, according to Opta data, if penalty goals are excluded, Miroslav Klose remains the top scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals. Meanwhile, Messi currently has only 14 goals excluding penalties.

This is also one of the rare World Cup goalscoring records that the Argentinian legend has yet to break. Among the players still competing in the 2026 World Cup, Kylian Mbappe of France is also tied with Messi for second place in terms of goals scored without penalties, with 14 goals. Notably, this striker only needed 16 matches to reach second place.
The Guinness World Records organization currently recognizes the Argentinian legend as having broken four records in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
These records include the football player with the most goals scored in finals – 18 goals, the player with the most appearances – 28 times, the player with the most wins – 18 wins, and finally, the player with the most minutes played with 2,489 minutes.
