On a late May afternoon, we visited the home of Mr. Ha Duy Hung (born in 1981) to learn about his recycled products made from waste. While chatting in the corner of his family's yard, a villager brought him a small, chipped earthenware pot and asked him to use it as a flower pot.
For Mr. Hung, this has become commonplace. For many years, instead of throwing away old, unusable items, many villagers have brought them to him to reuse. Perhaps that's why the approximately 30m² yard of his family's home is always bustling with visitors.
Mr. Hung shared: "I work as a plumber and electrician, and I often come across many broken bicycles, old TVs, plastic containers, tires, jars, etc., that are being thrown away. Feeling sorry for them, I brought them home and looked for ways to repurpose them. The initial idea came from my family's needs. Because our house is located on high ground, I was worried about my young children playing and potentially getting into danger, so I came up with the idea of making a protective fence."
From over 10 old bicycles he collected, in 2016 he began reinforcing and erecting them into a fence along the path leading to his house. On the bicycles, he repurposed old jars and pots as planters for flowers and ornamental plants, and combined them with lighting to create a unique space.
In the early days, the family yard was often piled high with old items, causing concern among relatives. However, he persevered, repurposing these items to give them a new lease on life instead of becoming waste.
To date, his family's yard has nearly 200 products created from recycled materials. An old television has been repurposed into an aquarium; beer bottles, plastic containers, tires, and broken jars have all been "revived" by him with new functions.
What Mr. Hung cherishes most is not the elaborate products, but the small corner where he preserves items associated with agricultural production in the past, such as winnowing baskets, carrying poles, earthenware jars, and farming tools. Many items that were once closely associated with the lives of rural people are gradually disappearing. Therefore, besides repurposing them for decoration, he wants to keep them so that his descendants know how their grandparents lived and produced in the past.
From his family's yard, his recycled products gradually appeared in the village's common areas. He built a fence around the path leading to the village's cultural center using old bicycles combined with flower pots and ornamental plants, creating a focal point for the residential area's landscape.
According to Ms. Trung Kieu Linh, a resident of Lu Tham village, what makes many people love Mr. Hung's model is not only its creativity but also the fact that each product carries the familiar charm of the countryside. Through his approach, many villagers have also changed their perspective on old items, proactively repurposing them to grow flowers and make decorations instead of throwing them away.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh, Party Secretary and Head of Lu Tham village, said: "Mr. Hung's model is one of the highlights of the village's environmental landscape. Based on its practical effectiveness, the village has chosen this as a model to promote and encourage people to learn from and replicate it. To date, two more households in the village have built miniature landscapes using recycled materials."
According to Mr. Tu Nhu Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Na Sam commune, Mr. Ha Duy Hung's model of recycling old items is an innovative approach, suitable to the local conditions. Not only does it contribute to reducing waste in the environment, but it also creates a ripple effect in the community, raising awareness of preserving the landscape and protecting the living environment.
From a simple idea by local people, seemingly discarded items have been given new value. Not only does it contribute to beautifying living spaces, but Mr. Hung's model also spreads awareness of environmental protection, preserves familiar images of the countryside, and contributes to building increasingly green, clean, and beautiful rural residential areas.
