For many years, the integrated farm model of Tran Ngoc Son, born in 1957 in Dong Co area, Thuc Luyen commune, Thanh Son district, combining fruit tree cultivation with livestock farming, forestry, and aquaculture, has yielded high economic efficiency and is a shining example that many people inside and outside the province have come to learn from and emulate.

Making a fortune in your homeland Veteran Tran Ngoc Son's integrated farm model has yielded high economic efficiency.

Making a fortune in your homeland

Having fought to defend the northern border in Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province, he was discharged from the army in August 1982 and returned to his hometown. At that time, the family's income still mainly came from agricultural production, so life was very difficult.

In 1991, after being leased over 30 hectares of barren hillside land in the Dong Co area of Thuc Luyen commune by the State, his family boldly planted acacia and tea trees. In 2007, after hearing about the profitability of red-fleshed dragon fruit through the media, he bought Taiwanese red-fleshed dragon fruit seedlings and planted 200 trees. However, the trees grew slowly, the fruits were small and fell off frequently, resulting in a loss of over 100 million VND in the very first year.

Undeterred, after thoroughly researching the information, he went to the Vietnam Institute of Vegetable and Fruit Research (Gia Lam district, Hanoi ) to seek advice and learn how to select, plant, and care for dragon fruit suitable for the local climate and soil. Mr. Son shared: "After receiving support in researching soil quality, topography, and local climate, and with advice and guidance from the Institute's staff, I decided to choose the Long Dinh 1 red-fleshed dragon fruit variety. Thanks to adhering to the correct technical care procedures, coupled with a good variety suitable for the soil, the dragon fruit trees grew and developed well, producing abundant and high-quality fruit. As a result, I quickly expanded the model to 3,000 trees on an area of 3 hectares. The harvested product is not enough to supply the market, bringing high economic efficiency."

Determined to prosper in his hometown, he persevered, overcoming difficulties, constantly accumulating experience, and buying more land to gradually plan and rebuild his production model, making it increasingly more complete. After being given the opportunity by the district and commune to visit and learn from successful economic models both domestically and internationally, and participating in training courses on the transfer of advanced scientific and technical knowledge, his family boldly converted all of their old, low-yielding tea plantations to expand the cultivation of red-fleshed dragon fruit and other fruit trees such as Hac Tri persimmons, Dien pomelos, jackfruit, etc., combined with forestry, livestock, poultry, and aquaculture. After many years of fruit tree cultivation, Mr. Son gained valuable experience to build a model based on a closed-loop circular agriculture, ensuring hygiene and safety, preventing diseases, protecting the environment, utilizing composted grass with manure, and combining it with organic fertilizers to improve soil aeration, promote healthy plant growth, and reduce pests and diseases.

BOX:

Currently, his family's integrated farm is neatly and scientifically planned into separate zones for livestock farming, fruit tree cultivation, production forestry, and aquaculture, covering a total area of nearly 40 hectares. This includes over 20 hectares of paper pulp trees, nearly 5 hectares of fruit trees, over 2 hectares of water surface for aquaculture, and a regular breeding stock of over 10,000 commercial chickens and 120 bee colonies. At the same time, he has planted over 120 nutmeg trees for their seeds. Gradually converting acacia plantations to oil palm plantations... Each year, his family's farm sells 35 tons of dragon fruit to the market at prices ranging from 18,000 to 25,000 VND/kg, 5 tons of seedless persimmons, 4,000 Dien pomelos, and 300 kg of fish... After deducting expenses, the model generates an income of over 2 billion VND per year, creating regular jobs for 10-12 workers with incomes ranging from 8 to 12 million VND per person per month.

Through his hard work and dedication to business, Mr. Son has become a prime example of a successful entrepreneur in the locality, attracting many people from within and outside the province to learn from his experience and achieve success. Beyond his entrepreneurial success, his family actively participates in social activities initiated by the local authorities, contributes to the new rural development program, supports funds for the poor, promotes education, and assists farmers.
