Making a fortune from duck farming

QTO - Coming from a purely agricultural area, Mr. Tran Tan (61 years old), in Dong Van village, Trieu Co commune, boldly invested in a model of raising ducks for egg production and incubation. With decades of experience in duck farming and the effective application of knowledge and scientific techniques, he has established an efficient economic model with an income of hundreds of millions of VND per year.

With his agile build and dark complexion, typical of a seasoned farmer, Mr. Tan chatted with us while feeding his ducks. Living in a low-lying, flood-prone area, like many other farmers, decades ago his family's livelihood depended on a few leased rice paddies. The inconsistent harvests of the rice crop couldn't provide his family with a comfortable life.

Mr. Tan recounted that about 20 years ago, after researching in many places and through television, books, and newspapers, he boldly bought several hundred ducklings to raise for eggs. Thanks to the initial success of duck farming, he gradually expanded the model. From mainly raising ducks in a free-range manner, he began to renovate his garden, dig a pond, and line the pond bottom with cement to raise ducks in a closed system. To date, his family's total flock of ducks is about 1,000, mainly raised for eggs to hatch. On average, Mr. Tan's family collects 600-700 duck eggs per day. Most of the good eggs are selected for hatching, while the substandard eggs are sold as food.

Previously, he incubated ducklings manually using incandescent light bulbs in styrofoam or cardboard boxes. This was a common, economical method that yielded a high hatching rate if the temperature was well controlled. However, to be able to incubate a large number of eggs, he invested tens of millions of dong to install two centrifugal electric egg incubators.

According to Mr. Tan, the centrifugal electric egg incubator (rotating 360 degrees) is a modern device that completely automates the incubation process, ensuring even egg turning and maintaining optimal temperature and humidity. This technology helps increase the hatching rate to over 90%, reduces labor, and is suitable for incubating eggs of many types of poultry. "With these two machines, each incubation cycle can handle nearly 2,000 eggs, saving costs and meeting the large demand for ducklings from traders," Mr. Tan shared.

From their duck breeding model, Mr. Tan's family supplies hundreds of thousands of hybrid ducklings to the market each year, generating an income of 300-400 million VND per year. This is also considered the pioneering and longest-standing duck breeding model in Dong Van village.

Not only is Mr. Tan an active farmer, but he was also trusted and elected as the Vice Chairman of the Dong Van Village Farmers' Association. Playing a leading and exemplary role as a grassroots association official, Mr. Tan has shared his experience, supported, and encouraged many other members to boldly develop their businesses and strive for mutual success. As a result, Dong Van village now has many successful duck farming models, including about three households with relatively large-scale operations.

According to Phan Van Phung, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Trieu Co commune and Chairman of the Trieu Co Commune Farmers' Association: “From small-scale farming, overcoming many difficulties and challenges, Tan's family has now developed a duck farming model with a scale of 1,000 ducks. Through this model, Mr. Tan has provided quality duck breeds, contributing to the development of the livestock farming movement in the commune in particular and in and outside the province in general. This is one of the typical models of successful farmer-entrepreneurs, with a ripple effect promoting the economic development of farmers in the locality...”
