Yesterday, November 25th, the leadership of the Vietnam College of Industry and Trade announced that the school had discovered that Mr. NTH had used a fake doctoral degree to apply for the position of head of the information technology department.
During Mr. NTH's probationary period in this position, the Vietnam College of Industry and Trade sent a notarized copy of his doctoral degree to the University of Science - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City for verification, but received a response stating that the degree information was not in the University of Science's archives.

Immediately after being discovered, Mr. NTH voluntarily resigned and cut off all contact with the schools.
'Fake PhD' nearly became head of college department.
Discussing this issue, Dr. Vo Van Tuan, Vice Rector of Van Lang University, said: "All diplomas have anti-counterfeiting stamps. However, any symbol can be faked if desired. Even using solutions like embedding chips or QR codes, fraudsters can still do it. There is only one thing that cannot be faked, and that is the information stored at the issuing institution. Therefore, diploma verification remains the only way to know if someone is using a fake diploma."
According to Dr. Tuan, there are two ways to verify diplomas: first, you can go to the university's website and enter the diploma number, which will display complete information about the recipient. However, most employers still send written requests to the diploma-issuing institutions to verify the qualifications of their employees.

Sharing this view, Master Van Chi Nam, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Science (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), observed: "If QR codes are used on diplomas, searching and verifying diplomas will be more convenient and accurate because the QR code allows linking to the diploma authentication data of the issuing institution. Although it is still possible to forge this code, and it is impossible to distinguish between real and fake diplomas with the naked eye, if it is a fake diploma, scanning the QR code will not lead to the accurate authentication information of the issuing institution."
Regarding the use of chips in diplomas, Master Nam believes it is still possible to combat forgery, but it would complicate verification and allow for the creation of counterfeit chips, making it difficult to distinguish between genuine and fake diplomas with the naked eye. Furthermore, chip embedding is costly for many parties involved.
"Therefore, the most accurate and reliable solution to determine whether a diploma is genuine or fake is to check the diploma on the online service provided by the issuing institution or to send a document requesting verification from the issuing institution," Master Nam shared.

Dr. Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang, Vice Rector of the University of Information Technology (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), also acknowledged that there is currently no foolproof solution to combat diploma forgery. "The best approach is still to verify diplomas, either by checking the universities' websites or sending a letter to the issuing institution requesting confirmation. Currently, employers still use this method to determine whether candidates are using genuine or fake diplomas," Dr. Khang stated.
It is known that on the diploma verification pages of the University of Information Technology, Van Lang University, and many other universities, simply entering the diploma number will display information about the diploma holder, so detecting fake diplomas is not too difficult nowadays.

Always verify carefully.
Dr. Vo Van Tuan stated that recently, many recruiting organizations have sent letters to the school requesting verification of diplomas. Through this process, the school has also encountered a few cases of individuals using fake diplomas to apply for jobs because their information was not in the school's database.
"From the university's perspective, when recruiting lecturers or staff, if the degree is from a domestic institution, we send a document to the issuing institution for verification. If it's from a foreign institution, we check if the issuing institution is recognized in Vietnam through the website of the Department of Quality Management under the Ministry of Education and Training," Dr. Tuan explained.
Dr. Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang also shared that the school's recruitment process is very rigorous. "Verification is done by sending written documents to the degree-issuing unit. To date, the school has not detected any applicants using fake degrees to apply to the school," Dr. Khang said.
