Not long ago, this place was still a remote fishing village, far from the center and lacking in basic necessities like fresh water and electricity. Now, thanks to the attention of the government and community support policies, Bich Dam is gradually changing and rising to prominence on the "map" of sustainable community tourism .
Ms. Duong Thi Tho, head of the Women's Association in Bich Dam residential area and a direct participant in community tourism, said that her family welcomes one to two groups of tourists each day, some groups of 10-25 people, and others smaller groups of 5-7 people. Tourists often ask her family to cook meals with simple, local menus. The authentic, intimate experience and the hospitality of the local people have contributed to the special appeal of community tourism on Bich Dam Island. “Fresh seafood such as shrimp, fish, and squid are readily available on the island; only the green vegetables have to be transported from the mainland. Reasonable costs, a peaceful atmosphere, and simple yet delicious food have kept many tourists coming back, even though my family has never advertised on social media,” Ms. Tho shared.
Mr. Truong Dinh Vinh, from the Bich Dam Community Tourism Management Board in Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City, stated that the Management Board has been established and has an official seal. In the coming time, the Board will continue working with local people to launch specialized teams such as: a transportation team, a food team, a rescue team, etc., to ensure consistent service and prevent price gouging and unfair competition.
In particular, Mr. Vinh emphasized the need to establish operating regulations, organize training in customer service skills, and encourage residents to maintain environmental hygiene and avoid littering. These are key factors for the sustainable development of community tourism. However, he also frankly acknowledged that the island still faces many obstacles, the biggest of which is the lack of electricity. The absence of a national power grid restricts the lives of residents as well as accommodation and food services, especially during the hot summer or cold rainy season, directly impacting the tourist experience.
According to Mr. Vinh, in order to develop community tourism in a fundamental and effective way, it is necessary to implement many solutions simultaneously in the coming time, such as: perfecting regulations on the management and operation of community tourism; training and developing local human resources. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the infrastructure and equipment for the Management Board; and develop comprehensive tour packages and products…
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Chu Hoi - Standing Vice President of the Vietnam Fisheries Association, emphasized that Bich Dam Island has special potential for developing community tourism associated with the rational exploitation of marine resources. Located in the core area of Nha Trang Bay, near the Hon Mun Marine Reserve - an internationally recognized reserve since 2001 - Bich Dam possesses a rich marine ecosystem, especially coral reefs, which are a vital source of livelihood for the local people.
According to him, marine conservation does not mean closure, but rather rational exploitation to serve sustainable livelihoods. This is the new spirit that the United Nations and international development programs are aiming for. He emphasized: "For community tourism in Bich Dam to develop effectively, it must ensure three key aspects: security, well-being, and safety – these are the core values that need to be upheld."
Bich Dam – once a small fishing village at the end of Hon Tre Island – is gradually becoming a model of community-based tourism linked to conservation and livelihoods. After a day of experiences on the island, the group of tourists boarded the last boat back to the mainland. On the small boat, everyone was still reluctant to leave the peaceful, rustic atmosphere of Bich Dam. Simple meals, genuine smiles from the locals, the gentle sound of waves lapping against the coral reefs.
