Silently cleaning the streets.

Every day at 3 a.m., residents along Chau Thi Vinh Te and Do Ba streets (My An ward, Ngu Hanh Son district) hear the familiar sounds of garbage collection from Phan Duc Nguyen, a worker in Team 1 of the Ngu Hanh Son Environmental Enterprise.

Having been involved in street cleaning for 7 years, Mr. Nguyen recounts that in the early days, he was just a temporary worker, filling in for other workers on their days off in the team or factory. Once he became familiar with the job, he was assigned to clean the main section of road at the intersection of Chau Thi Vinh Te and Do Ba streets, as well as smaller roads surrounding it. This area is home to many shops and restaurants catering to tourists, so maintaining a clean and beautiful streetscape is crucial.

It is known that the amount of garbage he collects in his 8-hour workday is about 16 bins of 660 liters each, equivalent to a 10-cubic-meter garbage compactor truck. Around 2:30 AM, while everyone is sound asleep, Mr. Nguyen leaves his house to go to the garbage collection facility to drive his truck and tries to finish most of his work before 8 AM. Mr. Nguyen said he has to work quickly so that when residents and tourists leave their homes in the morning, they see the garbage has been cleaned up, and also to avoid the summer heat.

From 8 a.m. until noon, Mr. Nguyen goes around collecting morning trash. During the current peak tourist season, the amount of trash he collects each day increases to 18 or 19 bins of 660 liters. Although he has to leave early and return late, seeing the streets clean, beautiful, and free of accumulated waste makes him happy. Finishing work at noon, he quickly returns to his rented room to cook for his three young children because his wife sells vegetables at the market from morning until early afternoon. “In recent years, as the children have grown older, it’s less strenuous. They take turns helping with housework outside of school hours, whereas before, my wife and I were constantly busy trying to balance work and childcare,” Mr. Nguyen said.

Despite the heavy workload, Mr. Nguyen is highly regarded by residents and colleagues as a diligent and responsible worker. Ms. Dang Thi Ha (Head of Group 15, My An Ward) said that Mr. Nguyen has been in charge of garbage collection in Group 15 and neighboring groups since 2017, and no one has complained about his work attitude. Mr. Nguyen always finishes his tasks, not just works until the end of his shift. Ms. Ha recounted that many residents lack awareness and still mix construction waste (rubber, debris) with household waste. Previous workers mostly ignored this, but Mr. Nguyen, wanting to keep the area clean, helps collect and sort the garbage.

“Nguyen’s dedication and sense of responsibility have been recognized and praised by the residents in the neighborhood. Two years ago, many households, upon hearing that Nguyen had an accident and had to take two weeks off work, sent gifts to share their condolences and offer encouragement. To us, Nguyen is not just an environmental worker, but also a friend and a role model who is always dedicated to his work,” Ms. Ha said.

Mr. Pham Hung Thai, Team Leader of Team 1, Ngu Hanh Son Environmental Enterprise, commented that Mr. Nguyen is one of the most diligent workers in the team. He rarely takes time off and collects almost the most garbage each day. In the areas assigned to him, Mr. Nguyen always completes his assigned tasks well, preventing garbage accumulation. As a worker who has been dedicated to environmental sanitation for many years, he always sets a good example by following the correct work procedures, contributing to creating a green, clean, and beautiful environment in Ngu Hanh Son district in particular and the city in general.
