Every day at 3am, people living along Chau Thi Vinh Te and Do Ba streets (My An ward, Ngu Hanh Son district) hear the familiar sounds of garbage collection from Mr. Phan Duc Nguyen, a worker of team 1, Ngu Hanh Son Environmental Enterprise.

Having been involved in street cleaning for 7 years, Mr. Nguyen said that in the early days of working, he was just a supplementary worker, working on days off for other workers in the team or the factory. When he got used to the job, he was assigned to be in charge of the main road at the Chau Thi Vinh Te - Do Ba intersection and the surrounding small roads. This is an area with many shops and restaurants serving tourists, so the requirement of keeping the street clean and beautiful is very important.
It is known that the amount of garbage he collects in 8 hours of work each day is about 16 660-liter trash bins, equivalent to a truck compacting 10 cubic meters of garbage. At about 2:30 a.m. when everyone is in deep sleep, Mr. Nguyen starts leaving home, going to the factory to drive to collect garbage and tries to complete most of the work before 8:00 a.m. Mr. Nguyen said he has to speed up the work so that when people and tourists leave their homes in the morning, they will see the garbage cleaned up, besides avoiding the summer sun.
From 8am to noon, Mr. Nguyen goes around collecting trash in the morning. Entering the current peak tourist season, the amount of trash collected by Mr. Nguyen each day increases to 18 or 19 660-liter bins. Although he has to leave early and return late, seeing the streets clean and beautiful, without any garbage piled up, he is excited. Finishing work at noon, he quickly returns to his rented room to cook for his three young children because his wife sells vegetables and tubers at the market from morning to early afternoon. “In recent years, the children have grown up and it has been less difficult. The children share in doing housework to help their parents outside of school hours, whereas before, my wife and I were “spinning like tops” to ensure work and still take care of the children,” said Mr. Nguyen.
Despite the large workload, Mr. Nguyen is considered by residents and colleagues to be a hard-working and responsible worker. Ms. Dang Thi Ha (Head of Group 15, My An Ward) said that Mr. Nguyen has been in charge of collecting garbage at Group 15 as well as neighboring groups since 2017 and has never had any complaints about his work attitude. Mr. Nguyen always finishes his work, not his time. Ms. Ha said that many people lack awareness and still throw construction waste (reduced prices, scrap metal) into household waste. Most of the previous workers ignored it and did not collect it, but Mr. Nguyen, because he wanted to clean up the garbage, helped collect and sort it.
“Nguyen’s spirit and responsibility in work are recognized and praised by the people in the residential groups. Two years ago, when many households heard that Nguyen had an accident and had to take two weeks off work, they sent gifts to share and encourage him. To us, Nguyen is not only an environmental worker but also a friend, an example of dedication to work,” said Ms. Ha.
Mr. Pham Hung Thai, Team Leader of Team 1, Ngu Hanh Son Environmental Enterprise, commented that Mr. Nguyen is one of the most diligent workers in the team. He rarely takes time off work and collects the most garbage every day. In the areas assigned to him, Mr. Nguyen always completes his assigned tasks well, without allowing garbage to accumulate. As a worker who has been involved in environmental sanitation for many years, he is always a pioneer in following the correct work procedures, contributing to creating a green, clean, and beautiful environment in Ngu Hanh Son district in particular and the city in general.
